Snakehead bounty: Maryland offers $200 gift card

Snakehead bounty: For every angler that catches and kills a snakehead fish in Maryland, the state is offering a $200 gift card "bounty" plus other incentives.

The second annual Maryland state bounty on snakeheads is sure to boost the media hype around this Asian invasive species.

Coming to a website near you: "Frankenfish" or "Fishzilla" or "The Fish That Ate Maryland."

Maybe that should be the next Maryland contest: Another Fearsome Nom de Mar for the Channidae family fish, that is believed to have originated in northern India some 50 million years ago.

No doubt, the concern over the snakehead species is justified. Already, the fish can found in at least eight US states. It's not just the fierce teeth, or that it can actually exist out of water, breathing air via a suprabranchial organ, for up to four days. The real threat is that it is a "top-level predator." In other words, it has no natural predators in the US.

The major concern is that it may replace the largemouth bass in Maryland and Virginia waters. In 2004, snakeheads were first spotted in the Potomac River. Since then, they've multiplied, and gotten bigger.

A study by Maryland's Department of Natural Resources and the state's Fish and Wildlife Department concluded that largemouth bass and snakeheads are battling it out for survival. The study found that the two species would eat each other's offspring, live in shallow water beneath protective lilies and grass and chase frog baits. The study also found that when snakehead populations declined, largemouth bass populations grew.

Last year, 69 fishermen entered the snakehead bounty contest, killing 82. Given that a single female snakehead can spawn 15,000 eggs at once, and typically mates five times a year, the contest isn't likely to put a huge dent in the snakehead population.

?We don?t expect that anglers will eradicate the snakehead population,? said Joe Love, DNR Tidal Bass program manager. ?We do believe this promotion and inspiration of anglers can help control the snakehead population. The information we gain from the Angler?s Log reports are also helpful in assessing the abundance, spread and impact of these feisty fish.?

This year's Maryland bounty includes a $200 gift card to Bass Pro Shops at Arundel Mills, a Maryland State Passport, which provides unlimited day-use entry for up to ten passengers in a vehicle, unlimited boat launching at State Park facilities and a 10 percent discount on State-operated concessions and boat rentals, or a Potomac River Fisheries Commission fishing license. The winner will be randomly drawn on November 30, 2012.

To enter, anglers must submit catch details and a photo of their dead snakehead online through the DNR Angler?s log, a fishing site.

Not sure if your catch is really a snakehead? Check out the Maryland state video on how to spot a snakehead ? or Fishzilla.

Calyx Institute to create ISP that keeps customer traffic private, away from prying governmental eyes

Calyx Institute to create an ISP that keeps customer traffic private, away from prying governmental eyesWouldn't it be nice if we were free to surf the web free from fear of having our traffic monitored and emails scraped by the NSA? Well, if Nicholas Merrill has his way, we won't have to rely on anonymous browsers or proxy servers -- we'll have a new ISP built from the ground up to protect customer privacy. A non-profit, the Calyx Institute, will run the ISP that'll employ end-to-end encryption on web traffic, plus encrypted emails to prevent anyone other than the user, including the ISP itself, from seeing people's internet activity. Because of this structure, Calyx, quite literally, won't be able to comply with governmental requests to obtain customer traffic data under the Patriot or Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Acts. The best part is, such online privacy may cost as little as $20 a month, and Merrill has hopes to provide a similarly secure VoIP service at some point as well. Of course, the venture will only be possible if Merrill can raise the $2 million needed to get it going -- which is why he's pitching the idea to venture capitalists in Silicon Valley and the general public through crowd-sourced funding site IndieGogo. Want to help out? Hit the source below to make a donation.

Stock Talk: Google's earnings call, stock split and not a whole lot of Android

Stock Talk

Today Google announced its latest set of financial results.  Not too shabby, either. Google's also splitting its stock by way of introducing a new class of shares. It sounds all complicated and stuff, but it’s really no big deal.  I’ll do my best to explain it in plain English for everyone.

First let’s look at Google’s results:

Google generated $10.65 billion in revenue for the first three months of 2012. That’s a mighty healthy 24 percent growth from the year-ago period. Operating income was up 32 percent.  Earnings per share (EPS) was $10.08, compared to $8.08 last year. In case you see headlines highlighting different earnings per share, keep in mind Wall Street usually cares about the “non GAAP” earnings, which is what we're talking about here.

The financials tell us that Google is growing at a good clip, and earnings are keeping pace with revenue growth. All of that is good news. Considering how dominant Google is in search and content advertising, it’s not like we were expecting profit margins to shrink.

The stock market likes the numbers so far. The $10.08 in EPS compares to Wall Street expectations of $9.64. Google stock was trading up about 3 percent in after-hours trading.

Canon unveils EOS-1D C and C500 4K Cinema cameras, two new lenses ahead of NAB

Image

In a departure from its last introduction as dramatic as the C300's Hollywood launch itself, Canon has quietly announced two additional cameras to sit alongside the company's former lone flagship. You may have caught a glimpse of the EOS-1D C at the C300 launch, but what six months ago was a mere mock-up has actually become a reality, likely to ship sometime this year. More out of left field, however, is the C500 -- a higher-end version of the C300 that adds several shooting modes, dual 3G-SDI ports and a larger, permanent grip. Both cameras can capture 4K video, but in substantially different ways.

The $15,000 1D C, which has the same chassis and still shooting features of its less-abled cousin, the EOS-1D X, pipes 4096 x 2160 8-bit 4:2:2 video to a CF card at 24 fps. Unlike the X, however, the C swaps a headphone jack for the X's PC socket, that's usually used for hooking up strobes. The higher-end C500 requires a dedicated external recorder, but offers two full-RAW output options: 4096 x 2960, that will be better suited for motion picture capture, and 3840 x 2160 for 4K TV. Both of these modes offer 10-bit 4:4:4 at 60 frames-per-second. There's also a half-RAW option, at 4096 x 1080 or 3840 x 1080 resolutions, also 10-bit 4:4:4, but at 120 fps. The C500 also includes dual CF slots, but that recording option is only available for 1080p (which can be captured to CF concurrently). Both cameras support Canon Log Gamma, empowering colorists to correct color in post production with more versatility by capturing additional information and a higher dynamic range.

Japanese biometric ATM reads your palm, tells fortune

Japanese biometric ATM reads your palm, tells fortune
A palm reading cash machine might not tell you your fortune, but it will, at least, dispense some of it. Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank in Japan has revealed that it will introduce the nation's first ATM that lets you withdraw money just by scanning your palm. This isn't the first ATM to use extra human verification, but it claims it's the first that functions without the need for your cash card. Customers will need to pop in to a branch to provide some manual verification -- and of course a palm scan -- then you're away. The bank hopes this will help people access their cash in the event of losing your card, or a natural disaster. Great until you upgrade to one of these.

Signs of incipient psychosis show up early in life. Reading them is key to rescuing kids from the abyss of a serious mental illness

From A Lethal Inheritance: A Mother Uncovers the Science behind Three Generations of Mental Illness, by Victoria Costello Image: Copyright ? 2012 by Victoria Costello

In Brief

  1. Signs of a mind in danger?including social deficits, impaired body sensations and reduced tolerance to stress?may show up anywhere from two months to 35 years before schizophrenia strikes.
  2. The prevalence of schizophrenia is 1.1 percent, but if a parent has the disorder, the child has a 10 to 12 percent increased risk and a 17.1 percent chance of developing a related personality disorder.
  3. Physical abuse, bullying by peers and ingesting cannabis can push a genetically vulnerable child toward psychosis.

From the moment he was handed to me in the delivery room, Alex, my firstborn, seemed not happy to be here. His eyes were bottomless, his expression grave. He spent his first three months writhing and screaming inconsolably, the word ?colic? wholly insufficient to describe our collective suffering. It wasn?t until his brother, Sammy, arrived that I realized just how different Alex was compared with other babies. Sammy cried only when he was hungry or wet. He made easy eye contact and loved to be stroked, hugged and kissed?all the things Alex recoiled from as an infant.

Melissa Gilbert Hospitalized on Dancing With the Stars

Melissa Gilbert suffered a scary spill Monday, but will be okay.

The actress, who wound up in the hospital after she fell during the paso doble on Dancing With the Stars last night, offered an update as to her status.

"I'm alright. Mild concussion and whiplash," she tweeted in the hours following the spill. "Very soon I'll be safely home resting and being taken care of."

Clearly there were no hard feelings toward her partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, as Melissa later wrote: "@Maksim you are my champion. I adore you."

At the after party on Monday night, the condition of Gilbert, who scored 22 points for the routine, was definitely on the minds of her fellow competitors.

"We hope she is OK," a concerned Maria Menounos told E! News. "I was really sad because she was really excited to go out tonight and celebrate."

"Hopefully she is alright," added young Roshon Fegan.

Her status as far as competing going forward is unclear, but tonight's results show should provide further updates, we're hoping. Get well, Melissa!

Kingston HyperX 3K SSD review round-up: Cheaper than its predecessor and almost as good

Kingston HyperX 3K SSD review round-up: Cheaper than its predecessor and almost as good

Kingston's new HyperX 3K SSD has appeared, powered by a second-generation SandForce SF-2281 processor. Sizes ranging from 90GB to 480GB and are appropriately priced between $140 to $700 -- depending on your storage tastes. With a SATA 6Gb/s interface wrapped in a black and aluminum casing, the HyperX 3K looks ready to spar with Intel's similarly SandForce-powered SSDs. Kingston's 2.5-inch drives have also finished the review party circuit, picking up some pretty positive responses. According to Anandtech's testing, the HyperX 3K performs almost as well as its 5K predecessor, landing just behind it for light workload tests (309.4 MB/s on average) and a heavy workload performance (225.8 MB/s) that netted it second place. Overall, they reckon the HyperX 3K is a "no-brainer," offering great performance for less of those hard-earned dollars.

The relatively rugged design was the first thing that caught Storage Review's eye, due to Kingston's (presumably necessary) thermal armor. The site was suitably impressed by read rates, which were comparable to the original HyperX SSD. Write performance didn't hold up quite as well during tests and due to the reduced quality of the NAND memory used, you will see a drop on total write cycles possible -- something that mainstream users probably won't lose much sleep over. Storage Review maintains that when it comes to both performance and pricing, Kingston's latest "delivers on both fronts." You can take a closer look at what both reviews have to say -- and a whole load of tests -- at the sources below.
