Dear Abby: Grandma's house needs family's attention - Monterey ...

Click photo to enlarge

Dear Abby

Dear Abby: My grandmother made the decision to move to an assisted-living facility two years ago. She left most of her belongings in her farmhouse, which has sat empty since then. Her health is fine, so she should be around for many years. It has already been decided that my dad will inherit the house, but he doesn't want to live there anytime soon because of the location. (It's way out in the country.)

I'm afraid the house is going to become unlivable if it sits for years without utilities or anyone taking care of it. Dad mows the grass, but that's about it, and all of Grandma's belongings are collecting dead flies. Nobody seems to care but me. Dad has three siblings, and between them there are nine grandchildren. How do I get my family to take care of Grandma's house? ? Conscientious in Kansas City, Kan.

Dear Conscientious: Your father may be inheriting the house, but is he also inheriting all of the contents? If the answer is no, there should be a family discussion about the disposition of the furniture, clothing, linens and any possible heirloom items.

I agree with you that nothing good can happen to the house if no one is paying attention. It's an invitation to theft or vandalism. The house should be cleaned and dusted. The furniture should be covered with sheets to keep it as free of dust as possible. Someone should check the place at least once a month.

If no one else in the family is willing to step up to the plate and help out, because you are conscientious, it looks like you're elected. If it's too much for you, perhaps a caretaker could be hired to watch over, or possibly live in, the house.

Dear Abby: My son, "Joe," is 19, a high school graduate living at home with his dad and me until he leaves for college next year. He will be paying his tuition, and we are charging him a token rent ($100/month) while he's not in school. He eats dinner with us most nights, and I usually do his laundry. He has a part-time job.

This has been working out fine except for one thing. Joe has a longtime girlfriend, and he has been spending some nights at her house. (She lives alone.) We haven't forbidden this because he's an adult, and I worry that if we say no he will move in with her. However, we are not comfortable with his spending nights there.

Part of our objection is we don't like the example it sets for his 13-year-old sister, but aside from that we don't think it's a good idea, although we can't say why. We know they're sexually active regardless of who sleeps where. Are we old-fashioned, or is it reasonable to ask him not to spend the whole night with his girlfriend? ? Old-School Parent

Dear Old School: Because you have misgivings about your son spending the night at his girlfriend's, you and your husband should talk to him about it together. Although he is an adult, I agree that what's going on sends a wrong message to his younger sister who, unless you talk to her about your family values, will think this is acceptable.

You should also take time to think through why you are uneasy about what your son is doing. If it has anything to do with worry about an unplanned pregnancy, your husband might be able to get through to him better than you can. If he intends to complete his college education, becoming a father could slow him down, if not end it.

"Slingatron" To Hurl Payloads Into Orbit

[unable to retrieve full-text content]cylonlover writes "People have been shooting things into space since the 1940s, but in every case this has involved using rockets. This works, but it's incredibly expensive with the cheapest launch costs hovering around $2,000 per pound. This is in part because almost every bit of the rocket is either destroyed or rendered unusable once it has put the payload into orbit. Reusable launch vehicles like the SpaceX Grasshopper offer one way to bring costs down, but another approach is to dump the rockets altogether and hurl payloads into orbit. That's what HyperV Technologies Corp. of Chantilly, Virginia is hoping to achieve with a 'mechanical hypervelocity mass accelerator' called the slingatron."

What did London Olympics 2012 do for us?

Not that many were predicting beforehand that this would be the case. In the weeks immediately before it all began, the vibrations on the radio, in the newspapers and on that 140-character shredder of reputation Twitter, insisted that we should prepare ourselves for national humiliation.

The way it was being told, everything that could go wrong with our hosting of the Games was certain to go wrong. We had outsourced the security operation to cack-handed, greedy incompetents, we had surrendered our civil liberties to the commercial interests of the sponsors, and allowed London?s road network to be thrown into jeopardy in order to accommodate the Ruritanian requirements of officials. Travel agents reported a surge of late bookings as people sought to flee from the anticipated omnishambles.

As a strategy, however, the escape plan began to unravel from the first beat of the opening ceremony. The moment the lights came up on a stadium transformed into a bucolic paradise, complete with livestock, it became clear that those who had deserted our shores were in the wrong place. Ninety minutes of dazzling theatre, dance, film and music later, the telephone lines must have been thrumming with refuseniks trying to negotiate passage home.

An innovative, witty mash-up of our cultural history, the opening ceremony spun the head, brought a tear to the eye and made everyone lucky enough to witness it smile hard and long. Danny Boyle?s brief had been to reintroduce Britain and its capital to the world. How successfully he achieved that, presenting his homeland as a modern, friendly and, above all, humorous place. It quickly became clear that London was now the centre of the known universe, the place on which the world's eyes were trained.

The ceremony was a reminder to the world ? and perhaps, more to the point, to ourselves ? that this country has long held within it a wellspring of joy. It was the most enticing welcome to these isles of wonder.

For the Mexican journalist sitting next to me in the stadium, the high point of that evening was the Queen?s cameo in a James Bond pastiche. He could not believe it really was her, could not believe the Queen was hitching up her skirt to join in the party. And he was right to be astonished. At that moment, all suggestions of stiff formality were bundled out of the helicopter. What her appearance insisted was that the next fortnight, everyone was invited to participate in the fun; we really were all in it together.

And improbable as it may have seemed, from that vertiginous high spot, things just got better. Snapshots of our glorious capital ? of horses apparently leaping over Canary Wharf, of cyclists skirting a sun-dappled Buckingham Palace, of female athletes in micro bikinis playing volleyball on Horse Guards Parade ? spun round the globe. How wonderful it all looked. The facilities were brilliant, the transport smooth, everything just worked.

Even the assumption that corporate ticketing would preclude the ordinary citizen from observing the action at first hand proved unfounded. The opportunity to watch for free was everywhere seized. Tens of thousands filled Hyde Park to witness the Brownlee brothers dominate the triathlon. A million people lined the streets around Hampton Court to see Kilburn?s King of Cool, Bradley Wiggins, win the time trial.

There is no doubt victories such as these by local competitors added to the overall sense of well-being. Not even in the wilder reaches of Lord Coe?s imagination could such a happy confluence have been envisaged: jaw-dropping facilities, brilliant hosting, and world-beating achievement by the home team.

And what was so inspiring about Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah, Chris Hoy and the other British champions was that they delivered. There was no failure of nerve, no wilting under the weight of expectation, no hint of the traditional way of British sport of crumbling when faced with a crucial penalty in a shoot-out. For a fortnight, spot kicks were smashed unerringly into the top corner.

Thus it was that the Games became awash with an unstoppable benevolent momentum: everyone ? administrators, spectators, volunteers and athletes alike ? quickly recognised they were having the time of their lives. This was an intoxicating daily demonstration of our best side: civic-minded, helpful, properly patriotic, proud of our culture?s sterling qualities. As Mayor Boris Johnson put it, this was ?a nation at ease with itself?.

A year on, looking back at that month-long festival of good cheer, however, we are obliged to wonder what the lasting effect of those beguiling few weeks might be. The talk now is of legacy. Messrs Coe and Johnson insist that the Olympic Park ? currently being reconfigured for future public use ? will continue to draw the curious in their thousands. But questions are rightly being asked about future funding: how active those inspired by what they saw can become if their local swimming pool is closing or their PE teacher is being laid off.

Talk of participation targets and bricks and mortar, however, may be missing the fundamental point about what the Olympics gave us. Surely the most significant benefit of the Games is the alteration it brought in our wider sensibility. What the festivities proved to us is that we can do things not just well, but better than anyone else. We can take on the world at anything, from a firework display to a rugby Test match, from a transport network to a tennis grand slam, from the production of motor cars to the Tour de France ? and win.

We have discovered, moreover, that the best way to enjoy something is to embrace the effort, to immerse ourselves, to volunteer. A year on, this is what really counts: we now know we can be proud of our country and what it can achieve. And that is surely worth ?9 billion of anyone?s money.

AP EXCLUSIVE: Egypt military builds case on Morsi

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's criminal investigation against the ousted president, announced Friday, is likely just the start of wider legal moves against Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood ? ominous prospects for a country seething with violent divisions.

During Morsi's three weeks in secret detention, military intelligence agents have extensively questioned him on the inner workings of his presidency and of the Brotherhood, seeking to prove he committed crimes including handing state secrets to the Islamist group, military officials told The Associated Press.

Military intelligence has had sole access to him and has questioned him at least once a day, sometimes for up to five hours, the officials said. At times they have presented him voice recordings of his conversations to question him on them, they said.

Throughout, Morsi has been denied access to television and newspapers, they said. He has been moved at least three times between Defense Ministry facilities in armored vehicles under heavy guard. He is currently in a facility outside Cairo, they said, without elaborating.

The military appears not to have decided yet what to do with the information it is gathering. But the officials said it could be used to fuel the civilian prosecution already underway, indict other Brotherhood figures or to justify a more dramatic move: renewing the ban on the Muslim Brotherhood itself.

The group was banned for decades, but became legal after Mubarak's fall and was widely seen as the real power and decision-maker behind Morsi during his year in office. Morsi and the group denied it played any role.

"We allowed Hosni Mubarak to be put on trial and he is one of our own, so there is nothing to stop us from doing this," said one military official familiar with the thinking of the military leadership. Mubarak was a career air force officer touted as a war hero before he became president in 1981. After his 2011 ouster, he was put on trial for complicity in killing protesters.

Since army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi removed Morsi on July 3, Egypt's first freely elected president has been held incommunicado by the military. Six well placed military and security officials, including two in military intelligence, spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the closed-door questioning.

On Friday, civilian prosecutors announced they had launched an investigation into Morsi on charges of murder and conspiring with the Palestinian militant group Hamas. At the heart of the case are allegations that Morsi and the Brotherhood worked with Hamas to carry out an attack on a prison that broke Morsi and around 30 other members of the group out of detention during the 2011 uprising against Mubarak. The attack killed 14 inmates.

The investigation is the first step toward an indictment and possible trial on the charges, which are punishable by death. Prosecutors ordered Morsi detained for 15 days pending the completion of the investigation and security officials late Friday said he was likely to be moved shortly to a civilian, high-security prison south of Cairo.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The Brotherhood and Hamas deny the charges, calling them politically motivated. Morsi and the Brotherhood figures freed with him have said local residents attacked the Wadi el-Natroun prison to free their own relatives and that they escaped amid the chaos.

The move to prosecute Morsi shows the "bankruptcy of the leaders of the bloody coup," Brotherhood spokesman Ahmed Aref said in a statement. Egyptians, he added, will reject "the return of the dictatorial police state and all the repression, tyranny and theft it entails."

But the accounts of Morsi's interrogations suggest the military has a more ambitious aim to cripple the 85-year-old Brotherhood.

A move to ban the group again would likely bring a backlash from Islamists.

One senior Brotherhood official, Mohammed el-Beltagy, sought to belittle the significance of such a move.

"They can dissolve it if they want. They are dissolving the whole country now," he told the AP at the site of the group's main protest sit-in at an eastern Cairo district.

Another Brotherhood figure told AP that the group is fully aware that a new ban "cannot be ruled out." But he warned that the result would be "a tragic phase" that would "end with el-Sissi's fall." He spoke on condition of anonymity because the group had not authorized him to discuss the implications of a ban.

The Brotherhood has contended that the military is aiming to crush the Islamist movement after the military coup, which the group and its allies say aims to destroy Egyptian democracy. El-Sissi removed Morsi after four days of massive protests against him by millions of Egyptians.

The military's lines of questioning appear aimed at proving the secretive Brotherhood went far beyond its legal status as a non-government organization involved solely in religious work and put itself above the law.

Military intelligence agents have interrogated Morsi extensively on his actions as president, the officials said. Among the topics are his discussions with foreign leaders during his trips abroad and his ties with Turkey and top Brotherhood ally Qatar, and with Gaza's Hamas rulers, the officials said.

One main avenue is to determine if he gave sensitive state information to Islamist allies abroad or to the Brotherhood, they said.

Another line of questioning focuses on the deeply secretive finances of the Brotherhood and its funding channels abroad, they said.

As a sign of how enmeshed the Brotherhood was with the president, one senior military official noted an incident soon after Morsi took office on June 30, 2012. Morsi brought 19 members of the Brotherhood's top leadership body with him for his first briefing by the then-head of the General Intelligence Agency, Maj. Gen. Murad Muwafi.

When Muwafi objected to their presence because they had no security clearance, Morsi casually told him, "Come on, general, there are no strangers here." Muwafi went on to give the briefing but avoided sharing sensitive material, said the official, who was directly involved in contacts between the Morsi administration and the military and intelligence agencies.

Several weeks later, Morsi fired Muwafi.

The 61-year-old Morsi initially refused to answer investigators' questions but eventually cautiously cooperated, according to a military official with access to records of the questioning.

Throughout, however, he repeatedly declared that he remains Egypt's legitimate president, the official said. He often insisted he tirelessly served Egypt's best interests but was thwarted by the "deep state," the phrase used by Egyptians to refer to Mubarak loyalists and other entrenched powers in the army, security forces and state institutions.

Morsi is observing the dawn-to-sunset fast of the holy month of Ramadan and when not being questioned, he has spent his time praying and reading the Quran, Islam's holy book. He was making a point of praying loudly, seeking God's assistance against his "oppressors," several officials said.

When confronted with audio recordings and documents, Morsi bristled and said his investigators should treat him with the respect a president is entitled to, said the official with access to the questioning records.

At another point, Morsi sarcastically told his interrogators that he did not see the point of them asking him questions since they had video and sound recordings of everything he did while in office, the official said.

Another area that Morsi was being interrogated about is his pardon for dozens of jailed militants who once embraced violence. The officials said the military believes many of them move to Sinai and formed jihadi cells that include foreign extremists.

In the same vein, the military investigators are questioning Morsi on his perceived attempt to stop the military from pursuing militants behind the killing nearly a year ago of 16 army troops at a remote post near the Israel and Gaza borders in Sinai.

During his presidency, Morsi's aides said he was trying to move away from the approach of security crackdowns in Sinai to negotiations to ease discontent among the population there. Opponents accused him of protecting jihadis.

Besides Morsi, five other senior Brotherhood figures have been detained and face investigations by prosecutors on a variety of charges, including inciting violence. More than a dozen others have arrest warrants against them but have not been detained.

Will Newell (NWL) Beat Earnings Estimates This Quarter?

Newell Rubbermaid Inc. (NWL) is set to declare second-quarter 2013 results on Jul 26. In the last quarter, the company?s adjusted earnings surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 9.4%. Let us now look at how things have developed for the imminent announcement.

Growth Factors in the Past Quarter

The year-over-year earnings growth resulted from a better operating performance, lower interest expenses and a favorable tax rate. The company?s strong brand portfolio, capital deployment strategy and Project Renewal Program also facilitated the company to post better-than-expected results.

Earnings Whispers?

Our proven model does not conclusively project that Newell Rubbermaid is likely to beat earnings estimate this quarter. A stock needs to have both a positive Earnings ESP (Read: Zacks Earnings ESP: A Better Method) and a Zacks Rank #1, 2 or 3 to surpass earnings estimates. However, that is not the case here due to the following factors:
?
Zacks ESP:
ESP for Newell Rubbermaid is 0.00% since the Most Accurate Estimate stands at 49 cents, which is in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate.

Zacks #2 Rank (Buy): Newell Rubbermaid?s Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) lowers the predictive power of ESP because the Zacks Rank #2 when combined with a 0.00% ESP makes surprise prediction difficult. We caution against stocks with Zacks Ranks #4 and #5 (Sell rated stocks) going into the earnings announcement, especially when the company is seeing negative estimate revisions momentum.

Other Stocks to Consider

Newell Rubbermaid is not the only firm we are looking up to this earnings season. Our model shows that the following stocks have the right combination of elements to post an earnings beat this quarter:

The Gap, Inc. (GPS) has an Earnings ESP of +1.70% and a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

Five Below, Inc. (FIVE) has an Earnings ESP of +11.11% and a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

Deckers Outdoor Corp. (DECK) has an Earnings ESP of +6.60% and a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

How big can Apple go? 13-inch iPad may be on the way

iPad

Apple's current iPad lineup

Apple

Apple's current iPad lineup could get a new 13-in. big brother.

Your next iPhone or iPad may be noticeably bigger than the device you?re carrying around today. Apple is reportedly testing a whopping 13-inch display for the iPad and larger iPhone displays, according to officials at the company?s suppliers.

Over the past few months, Apple has allegedly asked for prototypes of an iPhone with a display larger than four inches and a screen design for a tablet just under 13 inches, The Wall Street Journal reported. If Apple does decide to launch a bigger iPad, we may see this device as soon as the first half of 2014, according to Korean news source ET News.

This follows reports from last month that suggested Apple was experimenting with 4.7 and 5.7-inch screens for its future iPhones, although the company (as per usual) has not confirmed any plans for its upcoming products.

MORE: 25 Best iPad Apps

There?s no telling if these purported large-screened iPhones and iPads will ever make it to the market, but these reports suggest Apple is brainstorming new ways to appeal to consumers and snag the top smartphone spot from Samsung. While Apple is still the industry leader when it comes to tablet sales, Samsung claimed 33.1 percent of the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2013, while Apple only accounted for 17.9 percent of handset sales during the same period, according to Strategy Analytics.

The Wall Street Journal?s sources also suggest that Apple plans to refresh its 9.7-inch iPad with in-cell touch technology to create a thinner, sleeker design. Apple is currently ramping up production for this alleged iPad model just as suppliers have begun mass production on components for the new iPhone as well.

The upcoming iPhone that is expected to launch during the second half of this year will have the same screen size and resolution as the current iPhone 5, the newspaper reports. At the same time, Apple is working with manufacturing partners in Asia to create a less-expensive non-metal iPhone that will come in multiple color options.

When it come Summer cooking, I want fun, easy dishes that do not include hours near a hot stove. One dish that often pops into my mind as perfect for the Summer is pasta salad.

I added a slight twist by omitting the lettuce and using Dreamfields rotini pasta instead. I also added kidney beans and fresh herbs from the garden but not until after I took the photos. It was a big hit with the family as most kids would take pasta over lettuce any day.

Predicting Final Landing Spots for Best Remaining 2013 NBA Free Agents

Age:?23

Years Experience:?4

Last Team:?Milwaukee Bucks

Free-Agency Status:?Restricted

2012-13 Per-Game Stats:?17.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.1 blocks on 39.9 percent shooting

Given the tumultuous start to his career, it's befitting that Brandon Jennings has yet to find a home.

Rumors have run rampant since he entered restricted free agency. The latest batch of musings had the Detroit Pistons interested in a sign-and-trade, something Joe Dumars went on to vehemently deny.

All we know for sure is that Jennings is demanding $12 million annually, a pay day he's not worth and most definitely shouldn't receive.

Lining his pockets with more money than the Golden State Warriors gave to Stephen Curry just doesn't seem right. Because it isn't.

At his best, Jennings is an inefficient volume scorer who still hasn't proved he can run an offense. That type of production is not worth eight figures annually, hence his continued availability.

The?Journal Sentinel's Michael Hunt?astutely points out that the Bucks and Jennings may have to stick it out together for another year. With Luke Ridnour in the fold, Milwaukee seems prepared to move on from Jennings if it has to, but accepting the qualifying offer and spending one more season in Wisconsin is the only way the restricted free agent can have complete control of his own destiny.

It's also the only way he can drive up his stock enough in order to actualize the compensation he seems to be seeking.

Full-disclosure: part of me believes he'll wind up with the Pistons, who are pining for a point guard. Dumars may have deflected questions regarding their interest, but if Rajon Rondo proves unattainable from the Boston Celtics, Jennings is a point man they could pick up on the cheap via a sign-and-trade.

Mostly though, I see Jennings returning to Milwaukee for another season, without signing a new contract. Doing so is the only way he'll have the power he thinks he has now, but really doesn't.

Prediction:?Jennings stays with the Bucks

Is the West Turning Away from Middle East Energy?

Russian energy company Gazprom said this week it was considering sending a delegation to Algeria to review the prospects for more energy work. The Russian energy giant said it was interested in exploiting the estimated 160 trillion cubic feet of natural gas there. A report published in May warned that Algerian natural gas production was in decline, however, because aging fields were no longer giving up resources. A lack of foreign investments is hurting the situation even further. Though Gazprom is reviewing its options, a warning from the U.N. Security Council suggests it may be awhile before the region?s state of affairs are in order enough to support any major foreign interest.

Viktor Zubkov, chairman of the Gazprom board of directors, welcomed Algerian Ambassador to Russia Smail Chergui to his office in Moscow to discuss bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. Gazprom in 2006 signed a preliminary agreement with Algerian state energy company Sonatrach and in 2010 produced 2.1 million cubic feet of gas from the desert Rhourde Sayah-2 well, its first ever discovery in North Africa.

?The parties agreed to prepare and hold a business trip of Viktor Zubkov to Algeria before the end of the current year,? Gazprom said.

A May report from the U.S. Energy Department?s analytical arm reported Algeria in 2011 produced 2.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Production has been in decline since 2005, however, because its natural gas fields are depleting. The Algerian government in 2012 started revising national laws to bring in more foreign investments. The May report, however, stated several planned projects have faced setbacks or were repeatedly delayed despite those efforts.

Chinese ships sail near disputed island: Japan

Tokyo:?Three Chinese government ships sailed into waters around islands at the centre of a dispute on Thursday, the day after Japan's premier visited coastguards who patrol the area.

The maritime surveillance vessels entered the 12-nautical-mile zone regarded as the territorial waters of the Senkaku islands in the East China Sea, at around 9:30 am (0600 IST), the Japanese coastguard said.

China calls the islands the Diaoyus and claims them as its own.

The move came after Japanese Prime Minister Shizo Abe on Wednesday visited coastguards charged with protecting the area.

Abe was in the remote Okinawan island of Ishigaki in the East China Sea, 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) southwest of Tokyo, where he told crews his resolve to stand up for Japan was undimmed.

The visit came just a few days ahead of elections for half of the seats in the upper house of parliament, which observers expect to be a shoo-in for Abe's ruling boc.

Tensions have steadily risen between the two Asian giants, with China frequently sending official ships into waters around the Tokyo-administered islands.

The long-standing dispute reignited last September when Tokyo nationalised three islands in the chain in what it said was a mere administrative change of ownership from a private landowner.

China insists the islands were part of its territory until Japan annexed them in 1895 at the start of a half-century of acquisitive invasions that culminated in World War II.

Apple patent hints at possibility of Liquidmetal iPhone and iPad

Apple patent reveals progress towards Liquidmetal mobile devices

For all its tough chemical properties and unusual capacity for intricate molding, Liquidmetal is apparently too uneconomical for anything much bigger than Apple's SIM ejector tool or, perhaps, the chess pieces rendered above (for illustrative purposes only!). Attempts to use so-called "metallic glass" to mass-produce larger objects, like the bodies of phones or tablets, have been hampered by difficulties in creating large sheets of controllable thickness, because stretching and other traditional techniques just cause the stuff to break. However, a patent recently awarded to Crucible Intellectual Property (the shell company representing the exclusive licensing tie-up between Apple and Liquidmetal Technologies) suggests some progress has been made towards removing this barrier.

Now, we can't claim dwarven levels of expertise on the subject, but we're inclined to agree with the interpretation of the folks at Electronista, who spotted that the patent describes a range of factory methods (generally involving lots of melting and conveyor belts) for creating sheets of metallic glass of controllable thickness between 0.1mm and 25mm and in widths of up to three meters. The paperwork explicitof these sheets in making iPhones, iPads, watches or indeed "any electronic device known the art." In the shorter term, if you happen to really, really want a Liquidmetal chess set, you can register your enthusiasm at the More Coverage below.

Prior to Egypt?s coup, months of acrimony between president and top army general

The head of Egypt?s military, General Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, sat with a polite smile in the front row listening to President Mohammed Morsi give a 2 1/2-hour speech defending his year in office. Gen. El-Sissi even clapped lightly as the audience of Morsi supporters broke into cheers.

It was a calculating display of cool by an army general plotting the overthrow of his commander in chief. Just over a week later, Gen. el-Sissi slid in the knife, announcing Mr. Morsi?s ouster on state TV on July 3 as troops took the Islamist leader into custody.

More Related to this Story

The move was the culmination of nearly a year of acrimonious relations between Gen. el-Sissi and Egypt?s first freely elected ? and first civilian ? president.

A series of interviews by The Associated Press with defence, security and intelligence officials paint a picture of a president who intended to flex his civilian authority as supreme commander of the armed forces, issuing orders to Gen. el-Sissi. In turn, the military chief believed Mr. Morsi was leading the country into turmoil and repeatedly challenged him, defying his orders in at least two cases.

The degree of their differences suggests that the military had been planning for months to take greater control of the political reins in Egypt. When an activist group named Tamarod began a campaign to oust Mr. Morsi, building up to protests by millions nationwide that began June 30, it appears to have provided a golden opportunity for Gen. el-Sissi to get rid of the president. The military helped Tamarod from early on, communicating with it through third parties, according to the officials.

The reason, the officials said, was because of profound policy differences with Mr. Morsi. Gen. El-Sissi saw him as dangerously mismanaging a wave of protests early in the year that saw dozens killed by security forces. More significantly, however, the military also worried that Mr. Morsi was giving a free hand to Islamic militants in the Sinai Peninsula, ordering Gen. el-Sissi to stop crackdowns on jihadis who had killed Egyptian soldiers and were escalating a campaign of violence.

?I don?t want Muslims to shed the blood of fellow Muslims,? Mr. Morsi told Gen. el-Sissi in ordering a halt to a planned offensive in November, retired army General Sameh Seif el-Yazal told AP. Gen. Seif el-Yazal remains close to the military and sometimes appears with Gen. el-Sissi at public events.

And at root, the military establishment has historically had little tolerance for the Muslim Brotherhood, Mr. Morsi?s Islamist group. The military leadership has long held the conviction that the group puts its regional Islamist ambitions above Egypt?s security interests.

Its alliances with Gaza?s Hamas rulers and other Islamist groups alarmed the military, which believed Gaza militants were involved in Sinai violence. The officials said the military leadership also believed the Brotherhood was trying to co-opt commanders to turn against Gen. el-Sissi.

The military has been the most powerful institution in Egypt since officers staged a 1952 coup that toppled the monarchy. Except for Mr. Morsi, the military has since given Egypt all of its presidents and maintained a powerful influence over policy. Having a civilian leader over the military was entirely new for the country.

The Brotherhood accuses Gen. el-Sissi of turning against them and carrying out a coup to wreck democracy. Since being deposed, Mr. Morsi is detained by the military at an undisclosed Defence Ministry facility.

The Brotherhood had believed that Gen. el-Sissi was sympathetic with their Islamist agenda. A senior Brotherhood official told AP that Mr. Morsi installed Gen. el-Sissi, then the head of military intelligence, as Defence Minister and head of the armed forces in August 2012 in part because he had been the contact man between the Brotherhood and the military junta that ruled Egypt for nearly 17 months after the February 2011 fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Gen. El-Sissi spoke of his differences with Mr. Morsi for the first time Sunday when he addressed military officers in a meeting that was partially televised.

?I don?t want to count to you the number of times that the armed forces showed its reservations on many actions and measures that came as a surprise,? Gen. el-Sissi said.

Stream Amazon WMV videos to Galaxy Note 2 for viewing easily

Oodles of screen real estate make the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 terrific for videos, games, and reading; and its improved stylus aids productivity. A blazing quad-core processor, a great camera, and strong battery life round out the advantages of this Android 4.1 phone.

Galaxy Note 2 is really good for watching movies. However, not all the movies can be played smoothly. Some users have issues to play WMV VIDEOS, especially, the digital copy WMV files that got from amazon or other online stores. If you have the same problem, this post must be useful. In which, i will share you my own solution with all.

To downloaded Amazon Instant Video contents on Galaxy Note 2, you have to remove the protections and turn the Amazon movies and TV shows into free contents. The Pavtube Chewtune is highly recommended as a best tool for converting Amazon WMV to Tab 2 7.0 playable MP4 video.

Download ChewTune - the Amazon video converter for PC (also works with iTunes movie purchases). In case you run Mac, get the Mac version.

Converting/Transfer Amazon Movies and TV shows to Galaxy Note 2
Step 1. Drag and drop the movies from Amazon movie Library to the software. Or click ?Add? button on the main interface to import Amazon instant videos.

Step 2. Click ?Format? and select an output format for Galaxy Note 2. Here I suggest you choose ?Android>> Samsung >> Galaxy Note Video(*.mp4)?, which is optimized for playing movies in full screen on the display of Note 2.

3. Click ?Convert? to export DRM-free movies. The conversion proceeds as Unbox Video Player plays the movies. So DO NOT turn off Unbox Video Player until the conversion is completed.

When conversion completes, click ?Open? to locate the DRM-free movies, and copy movies from PC to Note 2. The next time you go camping trip, just bring along the Note 2 with favorite movies.

Meanwhile, if you have common wmv playback issues on Note 2, you may use the Best Galaxy Note 2 Video converter to deal with.

Good news! Pavtube is offering up to 50% off Special Summer Holiday Discount for its top programs, including Blu-ray Ripper (Win & Mac), Video Converter Ultimate (Win & Mac), Media Magician (Win & Mac), and DVD Creator (Win & Mac). Crash Davis matches Reggie

Wrapping up the final series of the first half, Orioles first baseman Chris Davis homered in his fourth consecutive game as the Orioles defeated the Blue Jays 7-4. The homer, a two-run shot in the third inning against Josh Johnson, was his 37th of the season, tying Reggie Jackson?s American League record for first-half home runs. In the interest of fairness (first halves vary in length based on scheduling), D.J. Short astutely pointed out on Twitter that Davis entered a tie with Hank Greenberg and Luis Gonzalez for home runs through 95 games.

For those keeping score at home, Davis is now more than halfway to Barry Bonds? single-season home run record of 73 and 24 home runs away from tying Roger Maris at 61 home runs, which some ? including Davis himself ? consider to be the legitimate single-season record.

The plane maker's?stock?was one of the standouts as the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose for an eighth straight day, its longest streak of gains since January.

Boeing gained $3.79, or 3.7 percent, to $105.66 after it was found that batteries were not the cause of a fire on one of its 787 aircraft at London's Heathrow airport Friday. Earlier this year, smoldering batteries on two 787s caused the plane to be grounded for more than three months.

The gains continued a hot streak for the market this month.?Stocks?rose to record levels last week after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank would not ease its stimulus before the economy was ready. The central banker's comments also stemmed a rise in Treasury yields.

"The general bias to the market is up," said David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Funds. "You can see a clear path to economic growth in the United States."

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 19.96 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 15,484.26.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.31 points, also 0.1 percent, to 1,682.50. The S&P is up 4.8 percent so far in July, putting it on track to surpass the 5 percent gain it had in January. Both the Dow and S&P are at all-time highs.

The Nasdaq composite rose 7.41 points, or 0.2 percent, to 3,607.49.

Small-company?stocks?had the biggest gains Monday. That's a sign investors are becoming confident in taking on more risk in exchange for the possibility of greater returns. The Russell 2000 rose 6.78 points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,043.30, bringing its gains for the year to 22.8 percent. That's far ahead of the S&P's year-to-date gain of 18 percent.

Investors will be listening to comments from Bernanke again this week for more clues about the central bank's outlook for the economy. The Fed chairman will give his semi-annual testimony to Congress on Wednesday. The central bank is currently buying $85 billion of bonds a month to keep interest rates low and to encourage borrowing and hiring.

The pace of companies reporting earnings will also increase this week.

"We expect modest earnings gains and we expect that management teams will guide for a cautiously optimistic view in the second half," said Jim Russell, a regional investment director at US Bank.

Earnings for the second quarter will rise by an average 3.2 percent for S&P 500 companies from a year ago, according to data from S&P Capital IQ. Earnings at financial companies are expected to rise by 18.8 percent, the most of any industry group.

Citigroup gained Monday, leading other bank?stocks?higher, after reporting earnings that beat analysts' expectations for the second quarter as investment banking profits surged. The bank's?stock?rose $1, or 2 percent, to $51.81.

A closely watched report on U.S. retail sales Monday morning had some disappointments for investors. Americans spent more at retail businesses in June, buying more cars and trucks, furniture and clothes, but they cut back on many other purchases, a mixed sign for economic growth. Retail sales rose just 0.4 percent from May, less than analysts had forecast and less than the 0.5 percent increase the previous month.

The market's advance was held back by news that economic growth in China, the second-biggest economy in the world, fell to the lowest since 1991, hurt by weak trade and efforts to cool a credit boom. China's economy expanded at an annual rate of 7.5 percent in the second quarter, down from 7.7 percent in the same period a year earlier.

Slowing global growth is one of the biggest threats to this year's?stockrally, said Uri Landesman, President of Platinum Partners. He predicts that?stocks?may be poised to slump as much as 15 percent in the coming months. Landesman said this year's market advance overstates the outlook for the economy.

"Most of the world's economies are sucking wind," Landesman said. "It's going to be very difficult to keep (the U.S. economy) going with weak exports."

In commodities trading, the price of crude oil rose 37 cents to $106.32 a barrel. Gold rose $5.90, or 0.5 percent, to $1,283.50 an ounce. The dollar rose against the euro and the Japanese yen.

In government bond trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.55 percent from 2.58 percent Friday. The yield is used as a benchmark for many kinds of loans including home mortgages.

Among other?stocks?making big moves, Leap Wireless soared $8.97, or 112 percent, to $16.95 after the carrier agreed to be acquired by AT&T for $1.19 billion, or $15 a share. The deal was announced late Friday. AT&T fell 26 cents, or 0.7 percent, $35.55.
