Man in Afghan army uniform kills 2 NATO troops

By The Associated Press
1:53 a.m., Dec. 29, 2011

? NATO says a man wearing an Afghan army uniform has killed two service members in eastern Afghanistan.

The alliance says the two NATO troops were killed on Thursday when the man turned his weapon against them.

NATO released no further details and did not disclose the nationalities of the slain service members. There was no word on what happened to the attacker.

The shooting appeared to be the latest in a series of attacks by members of the Afghan security forces against their coalition partners. Such attacks have raised fears of increased Taliban infiltration of the Afghan police and army as NATO speeds up the training of the security forces.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghan officials say a roadside bombing has killed 10 police officers and wounded one other in southwestern Helmand province.

A spokesman for the provincial governor, Daud Ahmadi, and police chief Haji Abdul Marjan said that Thursday's explosion destroyed a police pickup truck as it drove through Zarghun Kalay village in Helmand's Nad Ali district.

Both officials said the officers had left a training center and were headed home when their vehicle struck the bomb.

Marjan says they drove along the same road every day. Ahmadi says eight of those killed were new recruits.

AP-GfK Poll: In 2012, it can only get better

Graphic shows opinion poll of the year

Graphic shows opinion poll of the year

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Americans are hopeful for what 2012 will bring for their families and the country, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll, though most say 2011 was a year they would rather forget.

Nearly seven in 10 say the year gone by was a bad one, more than double those who consider it a success, according to the poll. But 62 percent are optimistic about what 2012 will bring for the nation, and more, 78 percent, are hopeful about the year their family will have in 2012.

Jeff Wolfe, 33, of Farmington, W.Va., said 2011 treated him well because he was able to find steady work as a lineman. But for the rest of the nation, things were "pretty rough," with so many Americans looking for jobs, he noted.

"For the first time since 2009, I worked all year," he said. Wolfe said he lost work in 2008 and again in 2010. But in 2011, the father of two school-age children said he was able to catch up on bills, buy his wife a new car and renovate his home.

Overall, the poll found 68 percent of Americans described 2011 as a bad year, compared with 29 percent who felt it was a good one.

A partisan divide, much like the one that ruled Washington this year, seems the only split in public opinion on 2011. Democrats were most likely to view 2011 positively (40 percent called it good), while independents and Republicans were less effusive. Beyond that, the poll found general agreement that 2011 is best left in the past.

Mary Burke, 57, of Ridgeland, S.C., felt economic pain in 2011. She saw prices rise for all of her expenses, from her light bill to groceries. "Paying $5 for a jar of mayonnaise is outrageous," she said.

Food and gas prices surged in 2011, but the most recent Consumer Price Index shows inflation leveling off. November statistics from the government showed a year-over-year inflation rate of 3.4 percent, the smallest such rise since April.

The AP-GfK poll found consumers are sensing the change. Just 18 percent of adults expect consumer prices to rise at a faster pace in the coming year, the lowest share to say so since the poll first asked the question in March. Most (51 percent) expect prices to rise at the same rate or more slowly.

And as the nation's economic fortunes overall appear to be tilting slightly positive, the public's expectations for the economy in the coming year are at their highest point since spring. According to the poll, 37 percent expect economic improvement in the next 12 months, compared with 24 percent who think the economy will slide downhill. That's the first time since May that significantly more people said things will get better than get worse.

On a personal level, 36 percent think their household's financial situation will improve over the next 12 months, while 11 percent think it will worsen. Americans' financial ebbs and flows affect their personal outlook for 2012. Those whose households have faced a job loss in the past six months or who describe their current financial situation as poor are less optimistic about what 2012 holds for them and their families than others, though that does not carry over to their forecast for the nation in 2012.

Optimism about the nation's path varies with views of the economy's direction. Those who say things have looked better in the past month are generally optimistic (79 percent), while just half of those who say things are getting worse feel positive about what 2012 holds for the country. And about 6 in 10 of those who distrust the two major political parties to handle the economy or job creation are pessimistic about how 2012 will turn out for the nation.

Burke said she is angered by politicians in Washington who she believes fail to look out for the interests of the American people.

"They don't care about me and you," she said. "They only care how they are going to line their pockets." As for the economy and nation improving in 2012, she said, "I pray and hope."

The partisan divide in impressions of 2011 persists in the outlook for 2012, with Democrats more optimistic than either Republicans or independents. But expectations for next year's presidential contest appear not to be a factor. Most partisans on both sides foresee victory for their side in the November 2012 presidential election: Three-quarters of Democrats say they think President Barack Obama will win re-election; three-quarters of Republicans say he will not.

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted Dec. 8-12 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,000 adults nationwide and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Lions rout Chargers 38-10 to clinch playoff spot

(AP) ? After a decade of losing, the Detroit Lions are in the playoffs.

And they made sure the San Diego Chargers are out.

With their fans chanting "PLAYOFFS" for the final minutes, Detroit got there for the first time since 1999 as Matthew Stafford threw three touchdown passes in the first half to beat the Chargers 38-10 Saturday.

The only team to lose all 16 games in a season (2008), the Lions (10-5) have won three straight after a seven-game slump to earn a wild-card spot in the playoffs.

Following the game, coach Jim Schwartz and the players did a victory lap at Ford Field, high-fiving fans in the front row.

According to the Chargers (7-8), they will not be in the postseason for a second straight year after making it five times in a six-season stretch. And that might cost coach Norv Turner his job.

Knowing they could move into the postseason simply by winning, the Lions held San Diego scoreless until midway through the third quarter, when Philip Rivers threw an 11-yard pass to Malcom Floyd to make it 24-7.

Detroit, though, closed strong to restore the rout.

The Lions and the Buffalo Bills started the season with the league's longest playoff droughts at 11 seasons. Detroit hasn't been in the playoffs since Barry Sanders was its star running back and its drought is over because a decades-long search for a franchise quarterback ended with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft. Coming off the league's only 0-16 season, Detroit selected Stafford and kept him healthy for the first time this season.

Stafford was almost perfect in the first half against San Diego, completing 21 of 26 passes for 260 yards with three TDs. He capped the first drive with a 7-yard pass to Brandon Pettigrew, threw a 3-yarder to Kevin Smith in the second quarter and connected with Calvin Johnson from 14 yards just before halftime to give the Lions a 24-0 lead.

Stafford finished with 373 yards passing to give him 4,518 this year, breaking Scott Mitchell's single-season team record from 1995. Perhaps not coincidently, that season marked the last time the Lions had double digits in wins.

The Lions will go for their 11th victory and to improve their playoff positioning, perhaps to draw the NFC East winner, on Jan. 1 against Green Bay, who they haven't beaten on the road since 1991.

The Chargers needed to extend their winning streak to four games to keep their postseason hopes alive, but the loss and Cincinnati's victory dashed them.

Eric Weddle recovered an onside kick after San Diego finally scored in the third quarter, but the Chargers stalled inside the Lions 5. Cornerback Chris Houston broke up a pass in the end zone and the Chargers had to settle for Nick Novak's field goal and a 14-point deficit.

Detroit's potent offense got the ball for the first time in the second half with 4:53 left in the third quarter and quickly gained 48 yards on passes to Nate Burleson and Johnson. Smith had a 4-yard run for a 6-yard TD and a 31-10 lead.

The Chargers then drove to the Detroit 2 and turned over the ball on downs, firing up its sideline and the fans who have been waiting a long time for a season like this one. It's the first time the Lions made the playoffs since Ford Field opened in 2002.

Rivers was 28 of 53 for 299 yards with a too-late TD and two interceptions, the second of which defensive end Cliff Avril snagged with his right hand and returned 4 yards to make it 38-10 late in the game.

Antonio Gates had four receptions to give him 588 in his career, breaking the Chargers record of 586 set by Hall of Famer Charlie Joiner.

Detroit got off to a good start, lobbing a pass into double coverage to Johnson for a 46-yard gain on the first snap and converting a third down for a TD.

Stafford found Pettigrew open in the end zone for a 7-yard throw, taking advantage of the Chargers assigning two defensive backs to Johnson on the same side of the field.

San Diego, meanwhile, didn't score on its opening possession for the first time in eight games and finished with just 10 points ? not nearly enough to keep up with the Stafford-led Lions.

Soletron targets $60 billion streetwear market (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Soletron, a start-up backed by former Adobe Systems Chief Executive Bruce Chizen, is building an online marketplace for streetwear and sneakers, a market that is worth almost $60 billion by one estimate.

Soletron, run by Shane Robinson and Allen Steigman, raised about $250,000 from angel investors including Chizen in early 2011 and launched its market in November. The company is raising more money in a series A round of venture capital financing early next year and Chizen plans to invest in the business again then.

"Urban wear is a huge niche that no one really pays attention to," Chizen told Reuters. "To become the Etsy of the streetwear market -- that's the whole idea."

Etsy, an online marketplace for handmade and vintage products launched in 2005, now has over 12 million members and saw sales of almost $500 million this year, through November.

Soletron has about 50 streetwear and sneaker designers selling more than 1,200 products so far. Brands include Dunkelvolk, Nooka and Kanvas Kings.

The company collects transaction fees from linking designers and buyers and generates other revenue from advertising and member subscriptions.

Robinson and Steigman have big plans because their target market is potentially huge. There is little official data on this part of the apparel market, but accounting firm Grant Thorton pegged urban apparel sales at $58 billion in 2006.

U.S. teenagers aged 15 to 19 spend $22 billion a year on fashion products, according to estimates by Piper Jaffray. Action sports brands, Wall Street's term for streetwear brands like Volcom, Quiksilver and Hurley, have been the most popular among wealthier teens since late 2008, according surveys conducted by the investment bank.

Volcom was acquired by French luxury giant PPR this year, and Nike owns Hurley.

"This industry is the proverbial sleeping giant of the retail and e-commerce worlds," Robinson said.

Soletron is competing against Karmaloop, an online streetwear retailer that is on course to generate about $130 million in revenue this year. The company, run by Greg Selkoe, has an online marketplace called Kazba, which accounts for about 10 percent of sales.

"There's room for more people doing it," Selkoe said.

"18 to 24 year-olds have spending power of $90 billion in the U.S. and a good 20 percent of that money goes into buying into this type of clothing and sneakers," he added. "Extrapolate globally and that's a massive market."

NFL Puts Super Bowl Online

60-Second Tech60-Second Tech | Technology

For the first time, the Super Bowl will stream live on February 5th, on the Web sites of both the NFL and NBC. Larry Greenemeier reports

More 60-Second Tech

No single event is more important in broadcasting each year than the National Football League's Super Bowl. Now that event looks to be a big draw online, too.

On February 5th, pro football's championship game will for the first time be streamed online via the NFL and NBC Web sites. Meanwhile, Verizon is offering a mobile Super Bowl viewing app for its customers.

NBC already streams "Sunday Night Football" games, so we're not talking about new technology. What's big is TV entrusting its crown jewel to the Web without fear of losing audience.

Then again, it might not be such a risk. At the recent Social TV Summit in New York City, networks and marketers acknowledged that they have to embrace the Web in order to survive. Even better, they think viewers using mobile devices while watching TV are more likely to stay tuned in, even during commercials.

Some research says people are watching about 22 more minutes of TV per month than a year ago. Sitting through the Super Bowl's halftime show alone more than meets that average?although there are probably easier ways to do it.

China village ends protests after government compromise (Reuters)

WUKAN, China (Reuters) ? A Chinese village protest that tested the ruling Communist Party for over a week ended on Wednesday after officials offered concessions over seized farmland and the death of a village leader, in a rare spectacle of the government backing down to mobilized citizens.

Residents of Wukan, in southern Guangdong province, had fended off police with barricades and held protests over the death in police custody of activist Xue Jinbo, whose family rejects the government's position that he died of natural causes, and against the seizure of farmland for development.

But after talks with officials, village representatives told residents to pull down protest banners and go back to their normal lives -- provided the government keeps to its word.

"Because this matter has been achieved, we won't persist in making noise," village organizer, Yang Semao, told an assembly hall of village representatives and reporters, referring to the protests. He said protest banners would be taken down.

"They've agreed to our initial requests," Yang told Reuters. But he added a caveat: "If the government doesn't meet its commitments, we'll protest again."

Senior officials negotiating with villagers agreed to release three men held over land protests in September, when a government office was trashed, and to re-examine the cause of Xue's death, a village organizer said earlier.

Xue's family and fellow villagers believe he was subjected to abuse that left injuries on his body. But the government said an autopsy showed he died of heart problems. Xue was detained over the land protests that broke out in September.

The concessions showed how eager higher leaders were to avoid the risk of fresh violence and bloodshed, said Ting Wai, political science professor at Hong Kong Baptist University.

"I think the local government did not want to make concessions, and then of course when time goes on, the people became more and more frustrated, and now it is really like a bomb, so in order to prevent the bomb from exploding the provincial government has to do something," he said.

Underscoring government fears of unrest, in a separate protest on Tuesday in Haimen, a town further east up the coast from Wukan, residents demonstrated in front of government offices and blocked a highway over plans to build a power plant.

State media said on Wednesday the government had agreed to suspend construction, though there was another protest which partially blocked a highway.

Chinese officials sometimes make low-key concessions to local protests, especially after they are over, and also punish protest organizers. But Wukan turned negotiations into a rare public spectacle, watched by foreign reporters and discussed within China -- despite domestic censorship of news.

Under a hot afternoon sun, a thousand villagers gathered to hear an organizer, Lin Zuluan, explain the concessions from the government, which they greeted with loud clapping.

He later told reporters that villagers would not suffer retribution for taking part in the protests.

WARY OF GOVERNMENT PROMISES

Some Wukan residents were wary of the government's promises.

"Our hearts are not at ease," said Zhong Xianmei, a resident in her thirties. "The dead body isn't back, are the detained back in their homes? Will their words count?"

Wang Yang, the Communist Party chief of Guangdong, obliquely acknowledged that the villagers had cause to complain, in comments published on Wednesday in the Southern Daily, the official province newspaper.

"This is the outcome of conflicts that accumulated over a long time in the course of economic and social development," said Wang, seen by many analysts as nursing hopes of a spot in China's next central leadership.

Guangdong is a prosperous part of China. But the upheavals of urbanization and industrialization have fanned discontent among increasingly assertive citizens, who often blame local officials for corruption and abuses.

Rural land in China is usually owned in name by village collectives. But in fact, government officials can mandate seizing land for development in return for compensation, which villagers often say is inadequate.

Protests in China have become relatively common over corruption, pollution, wages, and land grabs that local officials justify in the name of development.

Chinese experts put the number of "mass incidents," as such protests are known, at about 90,000 a year in recent years.

China's leaders, determined to maintain one-party control, worry that such outbursts might turn into broader and more persistent challenges to their power.

But even in Wukan, villagers professed faith in the central government. On Wednesday morning, about 300 of them lined the sides of a road into the village, preparing to welcome Zhu Mingguo, the main official negotiating with them.

Zhu promised an impartial autopsy for the late Xue, and "transparent" disclosure in the media of how the villagers' grievances are addressed, according to a report in the province's official newspaper, the Southern Daily.

Lin Zuluan, the Wukan organizer, told reporters that officials also agreed that the village can hold democratic elections. In China, village committees are in theory elected, but in practice there are many restrictions -- formal and informal -- on votes.

Analysis: The PlayBook is killing RIM

Jesus Diaz / Gizmodo

By Brian Barrett

Gizmodo

RIM finally eked out a decent quarter. Beat analyst estimates, even. That is, if you don't count the $485 million bath the company took on unsold tablets. The PlayBook ? ill conceived, poorly executed ? is RIM's worst product. And it might just take down the whole company.

It's been a trying year for RIM. There have been security snafus and subpar product launches and an overwhelming sense of stagnation. All of which is compounded by the company's blind hubris, be it last year'sridiculous BlackBerry Torch expectations or today's claim by co-CEO Mike Lazardis that every day he "[hears] stories ... about people saying the BlackBerry Bold is the best communication device in the world today." If those are the stories you're hearing, maybe you're spending too much time in the fiction aisle.

But despite all of the miscues, no matter how many blinders management has on, RIM has still managed to be profitable. Its subscription base hit 75 million this year. It pulls in a billion in cloud revenue on the regular. You'd be tempted to say that RIM was succeeding in spite of itself?if it weren't for its greatest failure. The PlayBook: it's RIM's Gilligan, albatross, and giant self-destruct button all rolled into one. It could be the death of them.

Remember: by all rights there shouldn't even?be?a PlayBook, and there wouldn't have been were it not for the iPad. And while RIM's certainly not the only Apple competitor caught with its pants down, it was the one with the most to lose. Samsung, Toshiba, Lenovo; they were on the hook for hardware, sure, but they could bunk comfortably on the USS Android. And more importantly, they could crank out consumer-focused iPad clones.

RIM, though? RIM had to make an?enterprise tablet. You know, that thing that no one needs or wants. It had to go it alone. And it got it so very, very wrong. No native email or calendar at launch, no BBM. And when you screw it up that badly, all you're left with is a $485 million answer to a question no one was asking.

But here's the part that might break your heart: RIM still doesn't get it. Today its managers said repeatedly that they believed in the PlayBook because people had finally started buying it ? as part of a two-for-one sale. Or at $100 a pop for its own employees. You know, the kinds of prices where RIM loses massive amounts of money on every sale.

The excuses were ample. The tablet market, said Lazardis, is still "in its infancy." Really? Apple sold more than twice as many iPads as Macs last quarter. Just because you've entered a baby in the race doesn't mean you're not competing against grown-ass men. But PlayBook 2.0 software, RIM said, will drive sales next February. Really? All native email means is that people who hate their PlayBooks now will hate them slightly less in a couple of months. It's not a selling point, it's table stakes. An ante that RIM's gone nearly a whole year without ponying up.

So $485 million is a lot of money, money RIM can't afford to eat every few months. But there are other costs that don't show up on the bottom line. Reputation takes a hit, sure. But so does productivity. RIM's other major letdown of the day was that BlackBerry 10 handsets would be delayed until late 2012. You think that would have happened if some of the company's best minds weren't giving CPR to its DOA tablet these last few months?

Lazardis' argument is that because PlayBook and BlackBerry 10 share QNX roots, developing for one is the same as developing for both. That's false. The iPad and iPhone are both iOS devices, but they each require separate ? and substantial ? resources to develop, hardware and software alike. Right now the PlayBook is a leech, sucking up the lifeblood that RIM could and should be using to make great phones again. And to make them quickly.

Next year, RIM's big PlayBook fix is to spend lots and lots of money on advertising and marketing. In fact, it's already started, right here on today's press release:

A conference call and live webcast will be held beginning at 5 pm ET, September 15, 2011, which can be accessed by dialing 1-877-974-0445 (North America), (+1)416-644-3414 (outside North America) or through your personal computer?or BlackBerry? PlayBook? tablet?at www.rim.com/investors/events/index.shtml.

Emphasis added, but implicit. Also: this was desperate enough to make me legitimately sad.

You can only throw so much good money after bad. Because eventually, you end up with nothing but a warehouse full of tablets, and a faded memory of a company that used to be pretty damn special.

Gingrich assailed by debate rivals, fights back (AP)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? Republican presidential front-runner Newt Gingrich clashed sharply with one rival, took pains to compliment another and said it was laughable for any of them to challenge his conservative credentials Thursday night in the last campaign debate before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses kick off the 2012 primary season.

In a forceful attack, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann said Gingrich "had his hand out and received $1.6 million to influence senior Republicans and keep the scam going in Washington, D.C.," for Freddie Mac, a government-backed housing entity.

"Just not true," Gingrich shot back. "I never lobbied under any circumstances," he added, denying an allegation she had not made.

The clash underscored the state of the race, with Gingrich, the former House speaker, atop the polls in Iowa and nationally, while Texas Rep. Ron Paul, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and his other pursuers work in television ads and elsewhere to overtake him in the final days before the caucuses.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, who has staked his campaign on Iowa, was quick to challenge Gingrich as a conservative leader. He recalled that Gingrich had to contend with a "conservative revolution' from the ranks of Republican lawmakers when he was House speaker in the 1990s.

Romney, who runs second in the polls in Iowa, largely refrained from criticizing Gingrich, despite increasingly barbed attacks in day-to-day campaigning. Instead, he firmly rejected suggestions that he had once favored gay marriage only to switch his position. "I have been a champion of protecting traditional marriage," he said.

Given the stakes, Gingrich, Bachmann and Santorum weren't the only contenders eager to impress Iowa voters and a nationwide television audience with their conservative grit.

"I hope I am the Tim Tebow of the Iowa caucuses," said Texas Gov. Rick Perry, referring to the Denver Broncos quarterback whose passing ability draws ridicule but who has led his team to a remarkable seven wins in eight weeks.

"We're getting screwed as Americans," said former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, insisting that he, in fact, was a steadier conservative than any of the others on stage.

"Anybody up here could beat Obama," said Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, whose views verge on libertarianism and who has struggled to expand his appeal.

And Bachmann, who was quicker than any other candidate to criticize a rival, bristled when challenged repeatedly on the accuracy of her facts. "I am a serious candidate for president of the United States, and my facts are accurate," she said.

Indeed, the big question in the opening moments of a fast-paced two-hour debate went to the heart of a dilemma that could eventually settle the race ? do conservative Republican caucus and primary voters pick a candidate with their hearts, or do they look elsewhere if they judge their favored candidate might not be able to defeat the president.

Those voters begin making that choice on Jan. 3, and if experience is any guide, one or more of the presidential hopefuls on the debate stage will not make it out of the state to compete in the New Hampshire primary a week later.

Gingrich, who seemed an also-ran in the earliest stages of the race, has emerged as a leader heading into the final stretch of the pre-primary campaign.

His decades in Washington and his post-congressional career as a consultant have been the subjects of tough critiques from Romney's campaign in the past week.

But the former speaker passed up an offer to criticize his rival on the issue of Medicare, saying, "I'm not in the business of blaming Gov. Romney." In fact, he said, Romney has made constructive suggestions for preserving the program that tens of millions of Americans rely on for health care yet faces deep financial woes.

Gingrich drew criticism earlier in the year for calling a GOP Medicare proposal "right-wing engineering." Romney refrained from criticizing that plan but did not embrace it in full.

Bachmann, who has long-since faded to the back of the pack in the polls, showed no such reluctance.

When he labeled her charges inaccurate, she shot back that when she made similar contentions in the previous debate, she was judged factually accurate by an independent arbiter. She said Gingrich's work for Freddie Mac was in furtherance of a "grandiose scam" to keep alive an entity at the heart of the housing crisis.

"I will state unequivocally for every person watching tonight: I have never once changed my positions because of any payment," Gingrich said, adding that in fact, he favored breaking up both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, his benefactor.

Moments later, Bachmann challenged Paul even more aggressively, saying his refusal to consider pre-emptive action to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon was dangerous.

"The problem would be the greatest under-reaction in world history if we have an avowed madman who uses that nuclear weapon to wipe nations off the face of the earth," she said, referring to an International Atomic Energy Agency report that said Iran was "within just months of being able to obtain that weapon."

Paul questioned the report. "They have no evidence; there has been no enrichment," he said.

Poll: Jobs priority over wealth gap (Politico)

Growing the economy is more important than reducing the wealth gap between rich and poor, a new Gallup survey shows.

The poll found 82 percent of those surveyed said it was ?extremely? or ?very? important for the government to improve the economy, while 46 percent of Americans said it was important to enact policies to trim the income and wealth gap, despite the attention given to the ?Occupy? demonstrations of the past few months.

However, 70 percent said the government should increase equality of opportunity for people to get ahead, according to Gallup.

On the issue of reducing the wealth gap, the poll found a large partisan divide.

While 72 percent of Democrats say that it is extremely or very important to address the inequalities, only 43 percent of independents and 21 percent of Republicans agree.

Separately, respondents were asked whether ?the fact that some people in the United States are rich and others are poor? is an acceptable part of the economic system - 52 percent said that it was acceptable, and 45 percent said that it was a problem that needed to be fixed.

The Gallup poll was conducted Nov. 28 to Dec. 1 with a sample of 1,012 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus four percentage points.

Romney wins endorsement of South Carolina governor (Reuters)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Reuters) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney picked up the endorsement of South Carolina's Republican governor, Nikki Haley, on Friday in a move that could boost his fortunes in the early voting state.

Romney has been lagging in South Carolina and his backers in the state have been urging him to campaign more frequently there. South Carolina holds the first primary in the South on January 21 and former U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich, who hails from neighboring Georgia, has a lead there.

South Carolina holds the third nominating contest after Iowa on January 3 and New Hampshire on January 10.

"The election next November will have ramifications for generations," Haley said in a statement released by the Romney campaign. "Neither South Carolina nor the nation can afford four more years of President (Barack) Obama, and Mitt Romney is the right person to take him on and get America back on track."

The announcement came a day after a smooth debate performance by Romney in Sioux City, the last debate of the Republican candidates before Iowa launches the 2012 election contest.

Haley was elected in 2010 with the strong backing of Tea Party champion Sarah Palin. Though her popularity has sagged a bit in recent months, her endorsement was still coveted by Republican presidential candidates.

Romney plans to spend Friday and Saturday campaigning in South Carolina.

Haley, the first woman governor of South Carolina, had been backed in her campaign for the office by Romney.

Romney has built up an impressive list of endorsements from establishment Republicans. At a campaign event at a Sioux City steel factory, Romney was introduced by former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, who dropped out of the presidential race last summer and later endorsed him.

In his remarks to the plant's employees, Romney injected a personal tone in a sign he is trying to connect better with everyday voters. He played up the entrepreneurial skills of his father, George Romney, who built up the old American Motors car company before he was elected governor of Michigan.

Romney singled out China for what he called unfair trade practices that have to be stopped. He said one of his first acts of business upon taking power in January 2013 would be to designate China as a currency manipulator.

"There are some cheaters out there and one of them is China. They've been stealing designs, patents, technology," he said. "You can't allow that to happen year after year after year."

Democrats Have Nothing to Fear from Gingrich Candidacy (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | According to the most recent Gallup poll, Newt Gingrich is the frontrunner in the Republican nomination for president. And it is not only voters who are starting to take seriously the thought of Gingrich as the Republican nominee for president. The possibility of Gingrich as the Republican standard bearer has reached the level where Politico reports that some of Newt's biggest critics within the party are for the time being quiet for fear of possibly damaging their potential nominee. All of which should make Democrats giddy.

There may be more flawed presidential candidates in the modern era than the thrice-married, Freddie Mac historian with a six-figure Tiffany account who brought us the government shutdown. But one is hard pressed to think of anyone in recent memory who combines Gingrich's personal and political foibles.

Yet, leave it to the Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Although everyone from liberal icon Barney Frank to conservative provocateur Ann Coulter are claiming a Newt candidacy would be a boon for the Democrats, yet according to an article in the Washington Post, some Democrats are beginning to fret at the possibility of facing off against Gingrich in the general election, fearing that unlike Romney, Gingrich would both excite the Republican base and appeal to Hispanics. To these Democrats I say: Relax. Let's look at each of these claims.

It is certainly clear, as evidenced by his inability to climb in the polls despite unarguably steady performances in the debates, that Mitt Romney has some real difficulty in exciting the base of his party. However, the Republican base is already pumped up at the prospect of beating the man many perceive as the socialist-in-chief. In fact, it is the Democrats who have much more of a reason to worry about their base, since many on the liberal leaning side of the party have been disappointed in everything from Obama's failure to close Guantanamo to his stepping up the war in Afghanistan to what is perceived as multiple cave-ins to the Republicans on the budget. There is nothing short of resurrecting Ronald Reagan more likely to drive this wing of the Democrat party to the polls than a Gingrich candidacy.

Neither should Democrats be concerned about Newt's outreach to Hispanics. In the last debate he suggested that some illegal immigrants who have been in this country for a long time should be given some legal status. But the only reason his proposal sounds remotely reasonable is the red meat the rest of the GOP field is throwing out on this issue. Indeed, when it comes time for the campaign, Newt will be stuck with the Republican platform on immigration and hemmed in on this issue in the same way as John McCain, who was even more outside the Republican mainstream on immigration but could not benefit electorally from his position.

By many accounts, it was Newt who saved the last Democratic presidency. History just might repeat itself.

Durban 2011: Tropical deforestation warming reassessed

Fred Pearce, consultant, Durban

rexfeatures_698668a.jpg(Image: Eye Ubiquitous/Rex Features)

Halting tropical deforestation gained a new level of urgency at the Durban climate change summit on Sunday: the practice contributes roughly twice as much to global warming as recent estimates suggest.

The news comes as Brazil announced that deforestation in the Amazon has reached its lowest level since monitoring began in 1988. But talks at Durban to reduce tropical deforestation even further using carbon offset money from industrialised nations have failed to progress.

The new figures suggest stopping deforestation could cut global carbon emissions by as much as three billion tonnes a year - the equivalent of more than one-third of fossil fuel emissions. They come from the first global assessment of carbon flows between ecosystems and the atmosphere, using millions of ground measurements as well as remote sensing, since 1994.

The statistics were buried in data published earlier this year in Science (DOI: 10.1126/science.1201609) by the Global Carbon Project, a network of experts on the carbon cycle. They were highlighted here in Durban by ecologist Bob Scholes of South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.

One reason for the changed estimate is that researchers have finally disentangled emissions from deforestation - at 2.9 billion tonnes a year - from the amount soaked up by regrowth of natural forests on logged and abandoned land, which is put at 1.6 billion tonnes.

In the past, the two have often been lumped together, giving a lower net loss of carbon from tropical forests. But the logged and degraded forests where this regrowth happens are increasingly being targeted by governments and agribusiness to grow oil palm and other cash crops - so natural regrowth will decline.

Another reason for the change comes from factoring the effect of deforestation beyond the tropical rainforests.? "The next major wave of deforestation is happening in Africa. Not in the moist forests but in the adjacent dry forests," said Scholes. "They have half as much carbon per hectare, but they have twice the area."

They are also much easier to transform into farmland than are the rainforests, making them a tempting target, he added.

Despite deforestation, however, the world's forests still manage to absorb 2.4 billion tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere each year. But as science here has raised the stakes for protection of the world's forests, UN negotiations aimed at finding money to do that are in crisis.

Talks to create a UN programme known as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) went backwards. Western nations pulled back on promised funding to protect forest carbon, and Brazil led developing countries in a retaliatory vetoing of rules for the detailed carbon reporting needed to underpin the scheme, said Louis Verchot of the Centre for International Forestry Research.

The rules as presently drafted mean that "countries can now claim that REDD will reduce emissions, which may never happen", said Roman Czebiniak of Greenpeace. Negotiations continue next year in Qatar. But whatever the rule book eventually adopted by REDD negotiators, large-scale funding for protecting carbon in forests will probably happen only if there is a global deal on carbon emissions. And the talk in the corridors here at the weekend was that 2015 was now the earliest date for such a deal.

Rosie O?Donnell is headed down the aisle again. She recently became engaged to girlfriend Michelle Rounds. Audience members at a taping of The Rosie Show, which tapes in Chicago, were the first to hear the news that Rosie O?Donnell and her lady love Michelle Rounds are engaged. O?Donnell broke the news those in the audience during a commercial break. Her rep later confirmed that the news is true. The soon to be married couple met at a Starbucks of all places earlier this year. Some of you may recall how O?Donnell admitted that when she first met her now soon to be wife she thought that she was 280years old and heterosexual. Boy was she wrong Rounds is 40-years old and a gay woman, who apparently makes the sometimes controversial comedian very happy. Judge lets college toss out Occupy Seattle camp

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

SEATTLE -- Another Occupy encampment is facing ouster.

A judge ruled Friday that Seattle Central Community College can evict Occupy Seattle protesters from its campus on Seattle's Capitol Hill.

In denying?a restraining order that would have prevented the eviction, ?Thurston County Judge Christine Pomeroy?said protesters have a right to protest, but not to camp at the campus, NBC station KING reported on its website.?The judge also mentioned health and safety risks at the encampment as a reason for eviction.

Under the ruling, the school must post an eviction notice, which could happen as early as Monday, KING.com reported. Then the protesters would have 72 hours to leave, meaning eviction could be as early as Thursday.

Next 'Occupy' targets: foreclosed homes, vacant lots

Occupy Seattle protesters shifted their tents to the SCCC campus last month after several battles with the city of Seattle over camps at Westlake Park and City Hall Plaza.

Just before Thanksgiving, the SCCC Board of Trustees approved an emergency rule banning camping on the college's property.

Immediately after, an Occupy Seattle protester named Patrica Sulley filed an injunction for a restraining order to stop the new rule, sending the case to court.

Occupy LA protest targets BofA foreclosures

"In the news sometimes we're portrayed as a this horrible, messy community, with all these problems. And it's a really beautiful mess,"?Sulley said?after the ruling.

SCCC administrators have said the Occupy camp costs the school about $20,000 a week. They have also expressed concerns about protesters entering the college's buildings.

Cities across the nation, including New York,?Los Angeles, Philadelphia?and Oakland?have evicted Occupy protesters from public spaces. Hundreds of people have been arrested in the raids, which have resulted in injuries to protesters and police in some places.

In Seattle, a large?Occupy encampment?in downtown Westlake Park was forcibly removed in October, and many of the?protesters then moved to the college campus.

This article includes reporting from NBC station KING of Seattle and msnbc.com staff.
