Poll: Jobs priority over wealth gap (Politico)

Growing the economy is more important than reducing the wealth gap between rich and poor, a new Gallup survey shows.

The poll found 82 percent of those surveyed said it was ?extremely? or ?very? important for the government to improve the economy, while 46 percent of Americans said it was important to enact policies to trim the income and wealth gap, despite the attention given to the ?Occupy? demonstrations of the past few months.

However, 70 percent said the government should increase equality of opportunity for people to get ahead, according to Gallup.

On the issue of reducing the wealth gap, the poll found a large partisan divide.

While 72 percent of Democrats say that it is extremely or very important to address the inequalities, only 43 percent of independents and 21 percent of Republicans agree.

Separately, respondents were asked whether ?the fact that some people in the United States are rich and others are poor? is an acceptable part of the economic system - 52 percent said that it was acceptable, and 45 percent said that it was a problem that needed to be fixed.

The Gallup poll was conducted Nov. 28 to Dec. 1 with a sample of 1,012 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus four percentage points.
