There is a fine line between advertising and spam and unfortunately many business owners do not understand the difference between the two. This is important because while a clever, well planted Internet marketing campaign can help to attract new customers and keep existing customers loyal, spam is likely to alienate both new customers and existing customers. This can be extremely damaging to profit margins for the business owners. This article will take a look at a few basic Internet marketing strategies such as banner ads, email campaign and message board posts and describe how each can quickly cross the line from clever advertising to spam. Banner ads are one of the most popular strategies which accompany an Internet marketing plan. These ads are usually ads which appear at the top of websites and span the width of the website. It is from this appearance that they earned the name banner ads but actually banner ads can refer to ads of a variety of different sizes and shapes which appear in an array of different locations on a website. In many cases the business owner purchases advertising space on these websites but the banner ad may also be placed as part of an exchange or an affiliate marketing campaign. Banner ad exchanges are situations in which one business owner posts a banner ad on his website in exchange for another business owner posting his banner ad on the other website. These agreements may be made individually between business owners with complementary businesses or as part of exchanges facilitated by a third party. In the case of affiliate marketing, an affiliate posts and advertisement for your business in exchange for compensation when the banner ad produces a desired effect such as generating website traffic or generating a sale. The terms of these agreements are determined beforehand and are generally based on a scale of pay per impression, pay per click or pay per sale or lead. Now that you understand what banner ads are, it is also important to understand how they can be overused and appear to be spam. Judiciously placing your banner ad on a few websites which are likely to attract an audience similar to your target audience is smart marketing, placing your banner ad on any website which will display the ad regardless of the target audience can be construed as spam. Internet users who feel as though your banner ads are everywhere they turn will not likely take your business seriously and are not likely to purchase products or services from you as a result of your banner ads. Email campaigns can also be very useful tools in the industry of Internet marketing. These campaigns may involve sending periodic e-newsletters filled with information as well as advertisements, short, informative email courses or emails offering discounts on products and services. Loyal customers who opt into your email list will likely not view these emails as spam and may purchase additional products and services from your business as a result of this marketing strategy. Additionally, potential customers who have specifically requested additional information on your products and services will also find this type of marketing to be useful. However, email recipients who did not request information are likely to view your emails as spam. Harvesting email addresses in a deceptive manner and using these addresses to send out mass emails will likely always be considered to be spam. Finally, message boards provide an excellent opportunity for business owners to obtain some free advertising where it will be noticed by members of the target audience. If the products and services you offer appeal to a specific niche, it is worthwhile to join message boards and online forums related to your industry of choice. Here you will find a large population of Internet users who may have an interest in your products. You might consider including a link to your business in your signature or posting the link when it is applicable to the conversation. However, care should be taken to carefully review the message board guidelines to ensure you are not doing anything inappropriate. This technique is smart marketing. Conversely, replying to every message with a link to your website when it is not relevant to the conversation is likely to be construed as spam by other members. Once they begin to view your posts as spam, they are not likely to visit your website via the links you post. ?

The benefits of environmental management systems for small and ...

Defra?s recent evidence-based study into the benefits of environmental management systems for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) presents new evidence of the financial benefits of green business. Four companies involved in the study agreed to showcase their experiences through case studies, which have been published alongside the main report.

What is the study about and why is that significant?

The study provides new evidence of the financial benefits to SMEs of developing an accredited environmental management system (EMS) to assess and manage their environmental impacts, and help use resources more efficiently. This supports Defra?s view that embedding resource efficiency across business operations brings benefits to the whole organisation. While not statistically significant, the sample of 31 SMEs used in the study is still the largest group of small and medium sized enterprises to undergo a detailed investigation of its certified EMS in the UK.

Defra encourages all organisations to implement an environmental management system, which is a structured framework for managing an organisation?s significant environmental impacts.?Similar to quality and safety management systems, an EMS can be a practical tool to help organisations manage, evaluate and improve their environmental performance in a verifiable way as well as meet their legal obligations concerning the environment.

Organisations?can demonstrate their commitment to meeting their environmental responsibilities by getting their EMS certified to ISO 14001, BS 8555, or the EU Eco-Management Audit Scheme, all of which are standards accredited by the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS).

What are the key findings of the study?

Two thirds of businesses surveyed either increased sales, or expected to do so, since implementing an environmental management system.? This breaks down into just over a third of SMEs in the study attributing their new business sales to implementing a certified EMS, and quoting an average value of ?14,961 per ?1m turnover in the year following certification, suggesting a payback period of 1 month for the new business sales alone versus EMS costs. Another third confirmed that they expected new sales to be achieved as a result of their EMS, but could not put a value on it.

Commercial and marketing opportunities were by far the most important initial trigger for the SMEs? decision to adopt an EMS, suggesting that this is more important than cost savings in converting SMEs to the benefits of EMSs.

Nevertheless, certified EMSs delivered cost savings for the majority of the 31 SMEs, with an annual average saving over 2 years of ?4,875 per ?m turnover. The costs of certifying and implementing the EMS were calculated at ?1,362 per ?m turnover (annual average over 2 years), suggesting a payback period of 3 months for the cost savings.

What was the reason for the study, and what problems did it seek to address?

Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are a vital part of the local and national economy accounting for 99.9% of all enterprises in the UK, and providing 59.8% of all private sector jobs in 2009. Due to their sheer number (about 2.9 million), SMEs collectively have the potential to exert significant pressures on the environment, but face a number of obstacles to addressing these pressures including lack of resources, specific expertise, information and awareness. Despite the vast number of SMEs in the UK only a very small proportion hold a certified environmental management system (EMS).

The purpose of this study was to deliver robust evidence on the environmental and financial benefits of certified EMSs for SMEs by surveying selected SMEs from both manufacturing and service sectors. The subsequent aim was to use this evidence to increase SME uptake of accredited EMSs as a method of unlocking the latent environmental and financial savings that are believed to exist in the SME sector as a whole.

How was the study conducted, and how robust was it?

The study was conducted by WYG, a? global multi-disciplinary consultancy, whose researchers measured the effectiveness of EMS implementation by a sample of SMEs taken from the manufacturing and service sectors. They investigated the level of environmental and cost savings the SMEs had achieved, including any new business sales. The international EMS standard ISO 14001 dominated the study?s sample of 31 SMEs, which tallies with the market dominance of this standard in the UK. Six of these had used the BS 8555/Acorn approach to reach ISO 14001, while 3 had remained at a particular BS 8555/Acorn phase.

Numerous methods were used to recruit SMEs for the study, however the SMEs were not randomly selected and each chose to participate in the study so were therefore ?self-selecting?. Therefore the results should be viewed as a series of case studies from which useful data can be drawn to raise awareness of the potential benefits of an accredited EMS for an SME

What other interesting findings came out of the study?

There was considerable variation in the savings seen. Not all SMEs in the study achieved savings but those SMEs that invested more in implementing the EMS upfront achieved the highest savings.

All but one of the SMEs in the study had received requests for information from customers about their EMS and over a half of the SMEs had in turn contacted their suppliers.

The study showed, the environmental issues that delivered the highest cumulative cost savings were energy, raw materials and business travel.? Waste to landfill contributed the highest average savings at 28 percent in year one and 43 percent in year two. Furthermore, 28 SMEs made an average cumulative saving in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) of 38.9 tonnes per ?m turnover per SME and that the carbon savings improved over time (Year 2 figures up 59% on Year 1 figures).

Environment Minister Richard Benyon underlined the link between environmental management and sustainable growth:

?All businesses should be planning green and growth together ? thinking strategically about environmental management leads to more sales, bigger profits and a more attractive business to clients and investors.

?It?s one of Defra?s top priorities to build a strong and sustainable green economy that is resilient to climate change. With business, we are working to green and grow our entire economy, protecting our environment and creating new investment, technologies and opportunities for trade.?

What are the next steps?

One of the aims of the study was to use the evidence to increase SME uptake of accredited EMSs as a method of unlocking the latent environmental and financial savings that are believed to exist in the SME sector as a whole. As part of this, Defra and WYG are in the process of disseminating the results of the study as widely as possible to the SME community, through their trade associations, stakeholder organisations and media channels.

Roundup: Monterrey wins, Toronto FC draws

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:31 p.m. ET March 28, 2012

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) -Two goals from Aldo de Nigris helped reigning champion Monterrey beat fellow Mexican side Pumas UNAM 3-0 on Wednesday in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinal first leg.

Hector Morales got the first goal in the 7th minute, with de Nigris adding his double in the second half. Chilean international Humberto Suazo set up all three goals.

The second leg is scheduled for next Wednesday in Mexico City, with the final to be against either Mexican side Santos Laguna or Toronto, who drew 1-1 in their semifinal first leg.

Morales opened the scoring early, back-heeling in a low cross from Suazo, as hosts Monterrey put pressure on Pumas early in the game.

De Nigris broke free at the backpost in the 60th to nod in Suazo's cross and extend Monterrey*s lead to two goals.

De Nigris added his second in the 72nd, turning a defender and slotting a left-foot shot into the corner of the net from inside the area, after being put through by Suazo.

In Toronto, the hosts were held to a draw, giving Santos Laguna the edge heading into the home return leg.

American Herculez Gomez scored for Santos in the 30th minute. It was his ninth of the season and fourth in this competition.

Miguel Aceval equalized for the Canadian club in the 37th minute but the hosts could not find a go-ahead goal despite having a man advantage in the closing minutes.

The winner of the CONCACAF Champions League participates in the Club World Cup, scheduled to be held in Japan in December.

How conservatives lost faith in science

msnbc.com

How do liberals and conservatives differ in their attitudes toward science? Statistics indicate that conservatives' confidence in science as an institution has declined dramatically since 1974.

By Alan Boyle

An analysis of 36 years' worth of polling data indicates that confidence in science as an institution has steadily declined among Americans who consider themselves conservatives, while confidence levels have been at steadier levels for other ideological groups.

The study, published in the April issue of the American Sociological Review, provides fresh ammunition for those who complain that conservative views on issues such as climate change are at odds with the scientific consensus.

"You can see this distrust in science among conservatives reflected in the current Republican primary campaign," Gordon Gauchat, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Sheps Center for Health Services Research, said in a news release from the American Sociological Association. "When people want to define themselves as conservatives relative to moderates and liberals, you often hear them raising questions about the validity of global warming and evolution, and talking about how 'intellectual elites' and scientists don't necessarily have the whole truth."

It's not clear how much impact Gauchat's study will have on the debate over politics and science: Liberals are likely to see it as confirmation of what they already believe, while conservatives who are skeptical about the scientific elite are likely to greet these scientific claims with skepticism as well.

But the analysis represents a serious effort to flesh out political attitudes toward science with real data. Gauchat bases his findings on a statistical analysis of survey results from the General Social Survey, a long-running project that has weighed public confidence in social institutions since 1974. The GSS has been conducted annually or semiannually by the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center, or NORC, with an annual average of 1,500 Americans taking part.

Gauchat cross-referenced attitudes toward the scientific community with various demographic categories, and found that two categories showed a significant erosion of trust in science: conservatives and frequent churchgoers. People who identified themselves as conservatives voiced more confidence in science than moderates or liberals in 1974, but by 2010, that level had fallen by more than 25 percent.

Gordon Gauchat / UNC-Chapel Hill / ASR

This graph shows the unadjusted mean values for public trust in science, classified by self-reported political ideology between 1974 and 2010. The figures are derived from the General Social Survey.

Why the drop? Gauchat suggested that the character of the conservative movement has changed over the past three and a half decades ? and so has the character of the scientific establishment.

"Over the last several decades, there's been an effort among those who define themselves as conservatives to clearly identify what it means to be a conservative," he said. "For whatever reason, this appears to involve opposing science and universities, and what is perceived as the 'liberal culture.' So, self-identified conservatives seem to lump these groups together and rally around the notion that what makes 'us' conservatives is that we don't agree with 'them.'"

Meanwhile, the perception of science's role in society has shifted as well.

"In the past, the scientific community was viewed as concerned primarily with macro structural matters such as winning the space race," Gauchat said. "Today, conservatives perceive the scientific community as more focused on regulatory matters such as stopping industry from producing too much carbon dioxide."

Gauchat's findings run counter to at least one liberal stereotype about conservatives: that right-wingers are distrustful of scientists because they have less education. The figures do support a link between more education and more trust in science, but they also show that more highly educated conservatives are, if anything, more distrustful.

That trend fits best with the concept that "educated or high-information conservatives will hold hyper-opinions about science, because they have a more sophisticated grasp about what types of knowledge will conform with or contradict their ideological positions, and they will prefer to believe what supports their ideology," Gauchat wrote.

So what does this mean for the role of science in setting national policy? "In a political climate in which all sides do not share a basic trust in science, scientific evidence no longer is viewed as a politically neutral factor in judging whether a public policy is good or bad," Gauchat said. Heightened distrust could turn young people away from careers in science and engineering, and in the long run, that could hurt America's standing in a global economy that is becoming increasingly competitive on the technological front.

Vanderbilt University's Jonathan Metzl and Northwestern University's Jennifer Richeson explain the science behind how the brain weighs decisions and forms political beliefs.

'The Republican Brain'
Gauchat took on this project to assess the claims made by science journalist Chris Mooney in his 2005 book, "The Republican War on Science" ? and Mooney, who reviewed the paper before publication, said the findings confirmed those claims.

Wiley

"The Republican Brain" is the latest book from Chris Mooney.

"It's certainly gratifying to see this study come out," Mooney told me. "I appreciate that the author actually undertook to use data. I'm glad I wasn't just whistling in the wind when it came to Republicans and science."

Now Mooney is coming out with another book, titled "The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Don't Believe in Science."

"In the book, I'm really careful to say there's what we call 'nature' and what we call 'nurture,' and you can't explain anything in politics without both of them," he said. "Whenever you see change in a group over time, that's probably 'nurture.'"

Mooney said the factors Gauchat mentioned would fit in the nurture category, along with the GOP's "Southern strategy" to bring what were once traditionally Democratic states into the Republican fold. "This is tapping into the power of nurture, but I also say we've ignored nature for too long," he said.

In "The Republican Brain," Mooney weaves his case for "nature" in politics from a variety of studies tracing the brain-based differences between liberal and conservative views of reality. (You'll find some of them by following the links below.)

"You're starting to find things about fixity of belief, desire to have certainty, and you see that these things are also associated with conservatism," he said. "These traits are content-neutral. You could take today's conservatives, stick them in [Soviet] Russia, and they can be very pro-science."

Mooney said people may be born with brains that predispose them either to liberal-leaning traits such as "openness to experience," or conservative-leaning traits such as "conscientiousness."

"The research suggests that people are born with a predisposition, but it's only a predisposition," Mooney said. "'Just born that way' is a phrase that makes me uncomfortable, because it implies some sort of hard wiring. Genes aren't destiny."

If you haven't figured it out by now, Mooney considers himself a liberal, and he's doubtful that any amount of "nurture" could turn him into a conservative. But he said liberals could learn a lot from conservatives, specifically about loyalty to leaders and to their cause. Like conservatives, some liberals may find themselves at odds with the scientific consensus on some issues. Which issues, specifically? Mooney pointed to hard-line stands against hydraulic fracturing (a.k.a. fracking), nuclear power, childhood vaccination and genetically modified organisms.

"Liberals have wanted to believe that if the system were just fair, then everybody would agree with us," he said. "That's a liberal fantasy. Actually, it turns out that liberalism is not the only way of being. ... Liberals should realize that not everybody's like them, and liberals' instincts in politics could be exactly what you don't want to do."

I'm imagining there's a lot to disagree with here, whether you're a liberal or a conservative. Good thing there's a comment section below. To paraphrase Monty Python, this is the right room for an argument.

Onkyo intros a new pair of TX-NR AV receivers, prices start at $999
Shortly after introducing its entry-level TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 receivers, Onkyo is taking the wraps off of a fresh pair of souped-up, pricier AV boxes. Both part of the TX-NR family, the TX-NR717 ($999) and TX-NR818 ($1,119) are carrying on the 7.2-channel audio tradition seen on their lower-priced siblings, while a Qdeo processor handles all video upscaling duties -- yes, 4K included. The 3D-ready couple is also packing THX Select 2 Plus certification, a whopping eight HDMI ports on each box, DTS-HD Master Audio / Dolby TrueHD decoding and a revamped 1080p GUI. Onkyo's also said iOS and Kindle Fire variants of its Android Remote App are in the works, though mum's the word on when they'll be up for grabs. Either of these good enough for your home setup? They won't hit shelves until May, which may (baller status) or may not (Average Joe) be enough time to save up.

Trayvon Inc: Fla teen's case turns into brand

FILE -In this Monday, March 26, 2012 file photo, Andre Parker, of Atlanta, wears a t-shirt in memory of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17-year-old who was killed by a Florida neighborhood watch captain while returning from a convenience store, during a rally outside the Georgia Capitol, in Atlanta. From the T-shirts and hoodie sales to pass-the-hat donations to trademarking slogans such as "Justice for Trayvon," the wheels are in motion to make money from the Florida shooting of teenager Trayvon Martin. His mother says at least some of the proceeds will be used to help other families. Experts say it is impossible to say how much could be made off the case but it's the latest example of a cause turned into an Internet-fueled brand. (AP Photo/David Goldman, File)

MIAMI (AP) ? From the T-shirt and hoodie sales to trademarking slogans like "Justice for Trayvon" to the pass-the-hat rallies that bring in thousands, the case of an unarmed black teenager killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer is quickly turning into an Internet-fueled brand.

Websites are hawking key chains bearing Trayvon Martin's likeness. His parents have bought two trademarks, saying they hope to raise money to help other families struck by tragedy. Trayvon clothes, bumper stickers, buttons and posters are up for grabs on eBay.

Vendors selling Martin T-shirts and hoodies have become fixtures at rallies in Sanford, the central Florida town where Martin was shot last month. At one Sanford rally this week, a man had a variety of T-shirts laid out on the ground as marchers went by, yelling out, "I've got every size!"

The Martin shooting by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmernan, who says he shot the 17-year-old Miami teen in self-defense, has inflamed racial tensions across the country, brought out thousands for rallies, prompted a civil rights probe and a personal reference to the case by President Barack Obama.

A phenomenon on that scale is bound to be commercialized, said Donna Hoffman, a marketing professor at the University of California-Riverside.

"People can start to wear their feelings and emotions. It makes sense, even if there's a profit motive," Hoffman said. "There's a legitimate interest in sharing the pain, and these products do that."

Van Johnson, who designs T-shirts and other apparel in Charlotte, N.C., said he initially wanted to come up with something for his 12-year-old son to show solidarity with Martin's supporters. He produced a color drawing based on a photograph of Martin wearing a hoodie, which the teenager was wearing on the night he was killed.

"I really don't expect to make more than $200 at the most," Johnson said. "I'm happy some people bought my products, that way a few people will have a very nice design on their shirt or hoodie to show their support."

Karrie Muhammad, who runs Young Nation Apparel in St. Louis, is selling a separate hoodie for $35 with the words "Please Don't Shoot Me I Only Have Skittles And A Drink!!!" Martin was returning from a convenience store with the candy and iced tea when he was confronted by Zimmerman.

"We really just kind of put the shirt out there this week. It's not necessarily profit at all," Muhammad said. "I wanted to bring some awareness to the issue. I felt it would be a good way to expose the store, to get our name out there."

Zimmerman, 28, who has a white father and Hispanic mother, has not been charged. Martin's parents have demanded he be arrested. The U.S. Justice Department has launched a probe to look for possible civil rights violations; a special state prosecutor is also investigating. Jackelyn Bernard, spokeswoman for special prosecutor Angela Corey, said Wednesday the investigation could take weeks and said it's unclear if a grand jury will be empaneled.

Hoffman said it's difficult to gauge how the Trayvon sales might stack up against those from similar cases, such as the 1992 Los Angeles riots following the Rodney King beating, because those were before the explosion of Internet marketing.

"Anyone can do it with any image," she said.

Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, headed off potential profit-seekers by filing trademark applications last week for the words "Justice For Trayvon" and "I Am Trayvon." The applications say the slogans may be used in digital media formats including CDs and DVDs. A family attorney said Wednesday the purpose is mainly to prevent others from exploiting Martin's image.

"It wasn't to make money off Trayvon's name, it was to stop the exploitation of Trayvon's name," said the attorney, Natalie Jackson. "We wanted this family to own their child's legacy."

A sign company called FamilyGraphix decided this week to pull its Martin-related decals after learning of Fulton's move. One such decal, which was to sell for $8, said "Don't Shoot Me, All I Have Is A Bag of Skittles."

Johnson, the T-shirt designer, questioned Fulton's move.

"You would think the parents of Trayvon Martin would encourage the spreading of their son's name and image," he said. "As a parent of four, I personally would welcome any and all exposure. I would want my son's name everywhere."

At rallies and church services, thousands of dollars in pledges have been made to help Fulton and Tracy Martin, Martin's father, pay expenses including travel to events in Washington and New York, Jackson said. At one early rally, the Rev. Al Sharpton asked people to make out checks to Fulton and put them in buckets that were passed around.

"Let's show the world we're going to finance our own movement," said Sharpton, who pledged $2,500 himself.

The case has had other benefits for involved organizations. More than 30,000 people signed an NAACP petition to Florida prosecutors in just a 24-hour period. Eric Wingerter, spokesman for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored people, says the organization hasn't used the case as a fundraising tool but has seen an uptick in memberships.

At some point, Hoffman said, the Trayvon Martin brand could wear thin if it's overused.

"People might feel, 'I'm sick of hearing about this.' That feeling could be accelerated if everywhere you turn, there are people wearing their hearts on their sleeve," Hoffman said. "All this merchandise out there will start to have a taint in the mind of the public."

Why Entrepreneurs Should NOT Buy Homes

house1Editor?s note:?James Altucher?is an investor, programmer, author, and entrepreneur. He is Managing Director of Formula Capital and has written 6 books on investing. His latest books are I Was Blind But Now I See and FAQ ME.?You can follow him?@jaltucher. Many people have said to me in the past few months, ?I?m going to buy a home.? Or, ?What do you think of the idea of me buying a home?? Everyone thinks: Well the housing crisis is now over so I should buy a home. They think: It's probably a good investment. They think: Time to put down "roots".? I've owned a home. A couple of times. I bought a home once after I sold a business. I then lost that home. I then went almost completely insane trying to sell it. Two things:?If you are about to do a startup or if you are in the middle of startup-phase then you definitely can't afford to waste the time or money to buy a house for reasons I explain below. Second, when you sell your startup?? everyone wants to buy a house with the proceeds. Don't. It's just part of the American mythology. You know the myth: the white picket fence, the yard, the pool, the walls that you can paint, the keeping up with the Jones' family. Just don't. You'll go broke. At least, if you are as stupid as me. I might be dumber than most though. The other story I have of owning a home is still too personal. Its filled with about as much pain as I can fit onto a page. Oh, I have a third one also from when I was growing up. But I don?t want to upset anyone in my family so I?ll leave it out. Oh, I have a fourth story that I just forgot about until this very second. But enough about me. Lets get right to it.

One game is a grudge match between teams that know each other all too well. The other is a rare rematch between virtual strangers.

The Final Four is set. In one game Saturday at the Superdome in New Orleans, Kentucky will play Louisville in an intrastate rivalry that will pit Cardinals coach Rick Pitino against the school he once coached, then later alienated by returning to the Bluegrass to lead its archrival.

In the other semifinal, it will be Ohio State and Kansas, meeting for only the ninth time in their history but for the second time this season. The Jayhawks won the first game 78-67 in Lawrence, Kan., back on Dec. 10. It was the first time the teams had met since 2000.

The winners will play for the national title April 2. Kentucky already has seven national titles but none since 1998, the year after Pitino left. Kansas has three championships, Louisville has two and Ohio State, better known as a football power, won its lone title in 1960 and is making its third trip to the Final Four since 1999.

Absent from this year's ultimate hoops weekend are the longshots and little guys who have made March Madness so special over the years. Although there are no Butlers or VCUs, there are plenty of good stories to tell. That list starts with Pitino vs. his old school.

It was Pitino who restored Kentucky to its former greatness when he arrived there in 1989 and the Wildcat program was coming off the sting of NCAA violations. Pitino took the program to three Final Fours and won one championship, but left in 1997 to take a second shot at the NBA, where he had previously tried and failed with the New York Knicks.

He didn't fare much better in four seasons with the Boston Celtics, and when the call back to the college game came, it came from Louisville, located only 70 miles up the road from Lexington and very much in the crosshairs of Kentucky fans. It has been 11 years, and most of the shock has worn off from what was once deemed an unforgivable betrayal. But there's nothing like a Final Four meeting to stir up some old memories.

"It is in our state. They're a great program. We're in two different leagues," Kentucky coach John Calipari said after the Wildcats beat Baylor 82-70 in the South Regional to advance to the Final Four for the second straight year. "The city of Louisville drives our state. The University of Louisville drives that city. So it's a very important thing for our state, and it's important that that school does well."

Maybe just not next Saturday.

The teams play every season, and most recently, they were ranked Nos. 3 and 4 in The Associated Press poll when they met on New Year's Eve. Kentucky won at home 69-62.

"We think they're excellent. We think they're great. I coached there. It's great. Great tradition," Pitino said Saturday, after Louisville rallied for a 72-68 win over Florida that put the Cardinals in the Final Four for the second time since the coach arrived. "But we want to be Louisville. We have a different mission. They have a different mission. But we both want to get to a Final Four and win a championship."

Led by a group of freshmen who may or may not return for a second year, Kentucky was established as an early 7.5-point favorite in the game. The Wildcats endured a brief scare when freshman Anthony Davis, their leading scorer, went down hard in the second half against Baylor with an injured knee. But it was only a knee-to-knee collision with a Baylor player and the injury isn't expected to be serious.

"The guys told me it was knee to knee," Calipari said of the early report from the trainers. "I said, 'Get up, mama's boy,' and he was fine."

Detroit gets union deal, but state oversight looms

DETROIT (Reuters) - Roughly half of Detroit's unionized public employees accepted pay cuts and other concessions designed to save the cash-strapped city $68 million a year, but it may not be enough to save Detroit from state oversight of its finances.

The leaders of 30 unions, representing over 6,000 of the 12,600 municipal workers in Michigan's largest city, said their members voted to accept pay cuts, layoffs and changes to city pensions.

But a spokesman for Governor Rick Snyder said the unions' actions did not go far enough.

"The state's concern is that the agreement does not generate the savings needed to address (Detroit's) long- and short-term crisis," said spokesman Terry Stanton.

He also noted the city's deal with the unions allows them to approve any consolidations and does not address retiree health-care benefits.

Detroit is expected to run out of cash by the spring as a result of a huge debt load, a steep population drop and sinking revenue.

A review team appointed by Snyder concluded on Wednesday the city is in severe financial stress, but any further actions by the team have been clouded by a court challenge to its ability to meet in private.

The Michigan Appeals Court on Thursday agreed to hear the state's emergency motion to overturn a lower court ruling that forced the team to meet publicly and prohibited it from approving a consent agreement aimed at fixing Detroit's financial problems.

The state hopes to have a ruling in its favor by Monday, the deadline for the review team to complete its work. A review team meeting has been scheduled for Monday afternoon, according to Caleb Buhs, a spokesman for the Michigan Treasury.

Eric Scorsone, an assistant professor of economics at Michigan State University, said under his reading of the 2011 law that made it easier for the state to intervene in financially troubled local governments, the review team goes out of existence after Monday.

According to Scorsone, the option of a consent agreement is gone unless the appeals court quickly overturns the order by Ingham County Court Judge William Collette, limiting recommendations the team could make to the governor.

Snyder, who has repeatedly said he does not favor the option of appointing an emergency manager for Detroit, last week proposed a consent agreement that city officials rejected.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, who was hospitalized on Thursday for a non-life threatening illness, sent Michigan Treasurer Andy Dillon new consent agreement language on Wednesday, said Treasury spokesman Buhs.

SHARED SACRIFICE

"This is a fix that we've all got to take part in," said Ed McNeil, special assistant to the president of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 25 at a news conference.

The concessions include a 10 percent pay cut, he said, adding that the plan approved by union members calls for other cost-saving measures, including 10 percent revenue cuts for city vendors and contractors, which would boost the annual savings to at least $99 million a year.

Mayor Bing's chief of staff Kirk Lewis said, however, the ratified deals were "not just about concessions, but more about shared sacrifice."

"These ratified agreements, reached before their existing contracts expired, reflect how labor and management can work together in a fair and constructive way," Lewis said. "The agreements also provide checks and balances that hold both unions and Mayor Bing's administration accountable."

The deal calls for Detroit and union officials to meet quarterly to review the city's finances, according to one official. Some union leaders expressed opposition to state intervention in Detroit, calling on Michigan officials to stop cutting revenue sharing due the city.

Last month, Bing said the city had reached tentative cost-cutting deals with some of its 48 unions as "the first meaningful step" toward resolving Detroit's financial crisis and avoiding the potential appointment of an emergency manager.

But Friday's announcement did not include Detroit's police and fire unions, which also had tentative deals. The Detroit Fire Fighters Association, which has 1,014 members, declined to comment. Spokesmen for the city's police unions were not immediately available for comment.
