OXON HILL, Md. (AP) ? In his fifth and final National Spelling Bee, Nicholas Rushlow had little reason to be nervous.

The 14-year-old eighth grader from Pickerington, Ohio, strutted confidently to the microphone in a preliminary round on Wednesday morning, high-fiving a fellow competitor who'd just missed a word. After greeting pronouncer Jacques Bailly and asking for the definition of "Gabbai" ? a minor synagogue official ? he spelled it with ease and gave a smile and a nod.

Rushlow has made it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee every year since 2008, although he's never made the finals. His best showing was a 14th-place finish last year. This is his last chance. Next year, he'll be too old.

While Rushlow was clearly at ease, the speller before him, Veto Lopez, exemplified how agonizing the competition can be. He paused for several seconds before starting to spell "blase," then stopped even longer in the middle of the word, cracking his knuckles and glancing at the television lights above him, before misspelling it.

There are 278 spellers participating in the preliminary rounds, and each will spell two words onstage Wednesday. Their scores are combined with a 50-word computer test they took Tuesday, and no more than 50 will advance to Thursday's semifinals. The finals are Thursday night.

The winner of the 85th Scripps National Spelling Bee gets $30,000 in cash, a trophy, a $2,500 savings bond, a $5,000 scholarship, $2,600 in reference works from the Encyclopedia Britannica and an online language course.

Although spellers aren't automatically eliminated for missing a word onstage during the preliminary rounds, it's all but impossible to advance without getting both words right.

Among those who got through the first word unscathed: 6-year-old Lori Anne Madison of Lake Ridge, Va., the youngest speller ever to qualify for the bee. She spelled "dirigible" with apparent ease after asking for the definition and hearing it used in a sentence. On the way back to her seat, she shared high-fives with several spellers.

Two of last year's finalists got through tough words: Nabeel Rahman of Buffalo, N.Y., spelled "coloratura" ? a word for florid decorations in vocal music ? and Arvind Mahankali of Bayside Hills, N.Y., got "garibaldi" ? a loose blouse inspired by an Italian revolutionary leader.

Samuel Estep of Berryville, Va., also a finalist last year, spelled "tahini."

Among the words that tripped up spellers Wednesday morning: "limpid," ''dragoon" and "maraud." Twenty-five words were misspelled in the morning round.

Displays of emotion were mostly muted, but Reid FitzHugh of Rockville, Md., clenched both fists after getting "ocarina," a flute-like instrument. Michael Reiner of Salem, Ohio, struggled with the pronunciation of "fete" before spelling it correctly and gave an emphatic fist pump before rolling his wheelchair away from the microphone. And Lena Greenberg of Philadelphia sprinted back to her chair and buried her face in her hands after spelling "jong," a South African word for friend.

Spellers admit there's some luck involved in the early rounds. Coralee LaRue, 11, of Vineyard Haven, Mass., felt relieved to be given "inviolable" and spelled it confidently. LaRue had finished second in her regional bee two years running before making the national bee this year.

But she wasn't as thrilled with the computer test as with her experience on stage.

"That was hard. There were a few that I just hadn't heard before," LaRue said. "Some, I just had to guess."

However, if you click on an item's image, a link opens that allows you to add the item to your shopping cart for purchase. Or you can opt to share the product via email with friends, find similarly colored items or check a box that lets your Fancy friends know that you already own it.

Fancy's interface, though, is nowhere near as slick as Pinterest's.?Items are organized in a single-column format, as opposed to Pinterest's inviting, multicolumn design. Also, if you're uploading something to Fancy from your computer, you have to enter the purchasing information yourself.?

Still, the ability to just "click and buy" is a big selling point for Fancy (at least until Pinterest adds its own e-commerce feature), as are a slew of celebrity kudos.?Last week Oscar de la Renta wound up selling five of its baseball-T-shirt-inspired green-and-white sequined silk sweaters, which retail for $2,400 a pop. This made me think back to a Decree that I wrote to God in 2003 after extricating myself from a 22 year abusive marriage and then a four year deceitful, destructive relationship. For those who may not know, a Decree is a sacred pact that you make with God. It is much more binding than goal setting; as you vow with God, as your partner and witness, to hold tight to your statements. The first thing that I wrote was, ?Thank you God for my Twin-Flame Relationship and marriage.? I knew that my two past abusive relationships had been soul mate relationships and along with love, they had brought great Karmic contrast, drama, and irritation. In this way they pushed my buttons and challenged me to grow. I also knew that once I transcended all the Karma, I would have the ability to attract my Twin-Flame Relationship; who is the divine completion of who I am. After writing this first statement, I paused for a moment, thinking about how extraordinary it would feel to be reunited with my Twin-Flame. Just then, the pen wrote, ?I live in a comfortable home near the ocean.? I do not know where this statement came from; as I certainly had never done automatic writing before and did not have the finances to own a beach home. The pen and I went on to write exactly what I dreamed for this beautiful relationship. I wrote, ?
?My husband is loyal, kind, gentle, responsible and trustworthy. He makes me a priority. He has a great sense of humor and loves to make me laugh. He is affectionate in public. We work together, love traveling the world and we are supportive of one another.? Because this is a Twin-Flame Relationship, both parties would mirror and reflect these same attributes to one another. The following week after writing this Decree, I reconnected with a friend of mine who was a nurse. Unbeknownst to me, she was also a clairvoyant and a Reiki Master/Teacher. When we ?synchronistically? bumped into each other again, she looked at me with a knowing glance and said, ?You were not ready before, but now you are spiritually ready to study Reiki. I have been sent to be your teacher.?
I studied and completed my Master/Teacher Degree in two disciplines of Reiki and opened my business Angel Healing House 3 months after writing my Decree. 6 months after writing my Decree, on September 20th, I was randomly invited to a ?come as your favorite rock star party?. I went as Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. At the stroke of 7 o?clock the only Elvis at the party, my future husband Pete, walked in and 5 hours later we were still talking. Two days after we met, he drove me to his beach home on the Sunshine Coast and 3 days later he asked to marry me. Actually, he wanted to ask to marry me after 3 days, but he thought he would wait until 5 days. (There are so many more magical synchronicities attached to our meeting and I will recount the miraculous story in full at the Twin-Flame Relationship workshop on July 14th.)
When I look over the grand adventure that Pete and I have been on ever since we met, we have known deep in our hearts that we are under the countenance, protection and guidance of God. Knowing that we could have whatever we wanted, we realized that the only way that our dreams could manifest for us, was by having a greater vision for our lives.

When we left Australia to come live in the States in 2008, Pete dreamed about working in the film industry. Knowing no-one in the film industry and with no job to go to, he took the burning desire in his heart and proceeded to ask God for signs for him to follow to realize his dream. After four years of hard work, diligence, determination, networking and focus to his dream, his journey has taken him to now working on his 3rdseason of the hit show ?The Voice? in the credited position of Transportation Coordinator. This is not luck. This is setting focused attention in one?s heart and faithfully following the signs that God presents him.
It is only by having dreams and having faith in them, that dreams ever come true.

Our secret is that every time God and angels have presented us with the next sign to making more of our dreams a reality, we have faithfully stepped forward; and miracles have occurred. Dreams no longer seem like a feat of magic to us; as we know all that we have to do is have the conviction and the belief in our hearts, and let God and the angels worry about the details as to how and when they will manifest.

In our recent research data series, The State of Automotive Marketing, we set out to evaluate and address some of the challenges that automotive dealers face today in connecting with customers and potential customers via social media. With the results from this series our goal is to help automotive marketers better understand and leverage best practices as part of the overall marketing mix. We want you to have the confidence when forming your plan and justifying marketing spend.

How did we retrieve the raw data?

Using Jigsaw.com?s API we were able to retrieve the company information of 17,669 automotive dealerships. ?We then crawled the domains of each dealership website and downloaded the homepage source code. By downloading all source code we were able to analyze which social media platforms were the preferred choice and how they are being utilized. Taking it one step further: With our retrieved data we were able to use Facebook?s Open Graph API and Twitter?s FollowerWonk to measure dealership engagement ratios.

What did we find in our research?

• Facebook has the largest presence of the auto industry with 6,628 dealers (38%)
  • Marketing among dealers is concentrated on the east coast, Midwest and west coast
  • Most dealers have between 5-222 fans
  • Most dealers have < 0.58% engagement
• Twitter has the second-largest presence of auto dealers with 4,164 (24%)
  • Twitter marketing is also concentrated on the East coast, Midwest and West coast
  • The average dealership Twitter account had between 3-144 followers
  • Over time, the average follower count tends to stagnate
• YouTube showed the third largest presence with 4,066 (23%)
• In terms of Google+, 1,344 (8%) of dealers have a Google+ page.
• Only 270 (2%) of dealerships had a LinkedIn company page.
• Facebook and Twitter are commonly used together with 3,940 (22%) of dealers utilizing both networks to market.

A former church leader already behind bars for sexually abusing a young boy pleaded guilty to abusing another boy.

42-year-old Joe Flowers took a plea deal Wednesday morning in court. He is already serving seven years after a jury convicted him last year of abusing a boy.

This is the second time Flowers has been in court in the last two days. Both cases involve the same boy. On Tuesday, Flowers pleaded guilty in federal court to taking the boy to Florida in 2004 and sexually abusing him. On Wednesday, he plead guilty again in county court and this time, he got emotional when he admitted what he did to the boy in his Henrietta home in 2005.

Defense attorney Maurice Verrillo said, ?He is very remorseful about the situation which he?s admitted to and I believe that?s genuine from what I?ve seen both in the case today and the case yesterday. He is very sorry about what happened.?

In court Wednesday, Flowers pleaded guilty to one count of criminal sex abuse, taking a plea deal. Flowers admitted he sexually abused the boy on Thanksgiving Day in 2005.

Assistant District Attorney Sarah VanStrydonck said, ?He engaged in this conduct in his home. It was where the boys would frequently spend the night, they are boys from the church and this victim, the young victim was a member of the church.?

Flowers also gave up his right to appeal. Included in Wednesday?s plea deal is a third victim. In that case, Flowers was facing two misdemeanor counts for having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a child.

The Incredible, Edible Egg | Triangle Arts and Entertainment

May is National Egg month and to celebrate I took the kids to the Sumner-Byrd Farm and Hatchery in Holly Springs. What fun we had! In addition to receiving a great tour of the farm/hatchery, Roy and David loaded us down with some fresh chicken and quail eggs. I never had quail eggs before and decided to pickle them. This is an easy and tasty way to prepare these tiny little eggs, and the recipe is at the end of this post. I used some of the fresh chicken eggs to make a classic quiche Lorraine, which I blogged about last week.

The Sumner-Byrd business services include selling certain breeds of eggs for hatching, and fresh eggs for eating (chicken, duck, goose and quail.) They also sell chicken chicks, quail chicks, guinea keets, ducklings and goslings. Before I visited the bird farm, I recently had made some jalapeno deviled eggs that are a great alternative to the traditional ones, especially if you like a little heat. Here?s the easy-to-make recipe.

Jalapeno Deviled Eggs

Ingredients

• One dozen eggs, hard boiled
• ? cup light mayonnaise
• ? cup sweet pickle relish
• 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
• 2 teaspoons cider vinegar
• Diced pickled jalapenos (add as many or few as you like)
• Salt to taste
• Sliced stuffed olives for garnish (optional)
• Paprika (optional)

Preparation

Slice the shelled eggs in half lengthwise, and scoop out the yellow cooked yolks into a bowl. Smash them with a fork. Add the mayo, relish, mustard, vinegar, jalapenos and salt, and mix until you have a nice and creamy filling.

Pipe or spoon the mixture into the egg halves. Top with a sliced olive and sprinkle with paprika if desired. Chill before serving.

These are a wonderful side dish with just the right kick of heat for any upcoming summer picnic or cookout.

Pickled Quail Eggs

As I previously mentioned, Roy and David gave me some quail eggs that I decided to pickle. I only had a dozen of these tiny eggs, so I included some regular eggs in order to fill up my pint jar. Both types of eggs turned out great!

Ingredients

• 24 fresh quail eggs
• ? cup cider vinegar
• ? medium beet, peeled and grated (wear gloves when working with the beet unless you want pink fingers)
• 2 tablespoons sugar
• 2 teaspoons kosher salt
• 2 teaspoons pickling spice (I used the spice that makes bread and butter pickles)
• 1 tablespoon whole peppercorns

Combine all of the ingredients (except the eggs) in a saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Remove this mixture from the heat and allow it to cool to room temperature.

Place the eggs in a medium saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil and remove pan from heat, cover with a tight-fitting lid, and let sit for 3 minutes. Place them in a ice water bath until they are cold, about 5 minutes or so. Carefully peel the eggs and place them in a sterilized pint jar.

Strain the cooled pickling liquid and discard whatever is left in the colander. Pour the strained mixture over the eggs and seal the jar. Refrigerate for a couple of days. Serve these eggs as part of a pickle tray or even on their own.
