Tram Tram is probably one of the best restaurants in Barcelona if you want to sample contemporary Catalan cuisine at a reasonable price?and escape the push, pull and noise of the city centre for a couple of hours.
Situated in the pleasant district of Sarri?, Tram Tram is a family owned and family run restaurant which employs the talents of Isidro Soler in the kitchen. Chef Soler spent time training with Ferran ?dria at the reknowned El Bulli, so that will give you a clue as to the approach here.
But the card is decidedly not all fashionable foams, fumes, and false flavours?more a deliberate and sincere attempt to enliven and extend classic dishes. Yes, there?s a certain playfulness, a sense of entertainment, at work? but eventually it?s taste and texture which captivates.
I?m not a big fan of desserts?though, during my first visit?having opted for a cheese plate?when I saw and tasted my companions? desserts, I couldn?t resist asking for one myself.
The restful ambience is equally good for a business lunch, family celebrations and romantic assignations. And there are tables on the exterior patio if you want to dine al fresco.
Evening menus are priced at 36? and 65? for the Festival Men?:??three appetisers, four main courses, and a choice of cheeses and dessert.
If you?re wary of committing yourselves to an evening meal ? I suggest you try the midday men? (22?) by way of acquainting yourselves with the quality of food, presentation, service and ambience.
The wines here are excellent value. And, if you?re wary of splashing out on a bottle before properly tasting it, then you?ll be pleased to know that they serve a selection of wines by the glass, including an organic Pened?s (merlot) for only 5? , and a good white from Empord? for only 4?.
Sarri? is easily got to via the FGC (Ferrocarils de la Generalitat de Catalunya) rail network ? it?s about an eight minute ride from Pla?a Catalunya or Provenza to Sarri?, on any line except Line 7. Trains are very frequent throughout the day ? and, you can use your T-10 integrated transport ticket. Simple.
Before you set off be aware that the restaurant is NOT OPEN on Sunday evening and on Mondays (though is open on Monday evenings during July).
It?s an easy, relaxed ten minute stroll from the rail station to the restaurant. There are some interesting small shops and bars on the narrow, semi-pedestrianised Major de Sarri??? which has something of the feel of a traditional English high street. If heading out there for lunch you may want to plan to arrive in Sarri? around 1pm ? allowing yourselves time to browse around and stop off for an aperitivo before lunch at 2pm.
You can read my post about TRAM TRAM for Spotted by Locals HERE.
When you wander along the Major de Sarri? you?ll pass El Vell Sarri? on the corner of the square which fronts ?the town hall ? another excellent, though very different, traditional restaurant. SEE this link.
?Bon profit!
