If the last year of product releases has taught us anything, it is that there is no such thing as one tablet to rule them all. Samsung is a company that has a history of throwing hardware out into the public domain and watching to see what sticks. Very few of their smartphones and tablets are massively successful but the ones that are break records. With that in mind, this holiday season users will find themselves asking which Samsung tablet is the one for them. Does it make more sense to get the pure Google experience Nexus 10 or the pen-friendly Galaxy Note 10.1?
The biggest difference between these two tablets is the screen. In fact, the top selling point for the Nexus 10 is the 300 ppi screen and its 2560?1600 resolution. That?s exactly twice the resolution and pixel density of the Galaxy Note 10.1 with sounds like a good thing, but it is worth noting that the GPU in the Nexus 10 is working at maximum capacity to draw all of the pixels required to fill that massive resolution. The GPU in the Note 10.1 doesn?t need to work nearly as hard, but also has the less powerful Mali-400MP that comes with the less powerful (but still quad-core) Exynos 4412 processor.
So, when talking about raw power the Nexus 10 clearly takes the cake, but when running multiple tasks and trying to watch an HD video you?ll likely get a smoother experience from the Note 10.1.
The Note?s key feature is a Wacom-powered screen that includes a stylus to draw directly on it. Samsung has included plenty of software to take advantage of the stylus setup, making the Note 10.1 ideal for anyone looking to take notes, doodle, or otherwise extend their tablet experience. The pressure-sensitive tip of the stylus allows users to draw with a feel that mimics a real pen or paintbrush, but without the powerful software that a Wacom user expects whole the experience is fairly gimmicky. Basically, the stylus is nice to have if you are going to use it, but not a must-have feature.
The Nexus 10 exists as the flagship 10-inch tablet from Google and runs the latest software, while Samsung is still in the process of updating the Galaxy Note 10.1 Android 4.1, the previous version of the OS. Version 4.2 of Android offers a key new feature for tablets: the ability to support multiple users. Because Samsung?s own software prevents a quick upgrade path to the latest version of Android, the Galaxy Note 10.1 remains a single-person tablet, so anyone that uses it will have access to all your personal information, rather than allowing them to use a guest mode that restricts access to that kind of data.
Finally, there?s pricing. The Nexus 10 is an impressive piece of hardware, but also comes in $100 cheaper than the Galaxy Note 10.1 with the same amount of storage. Since the Note 10.1 has been out for longer, it is possible that there will be holiday sales that drop the price to match the Nexus 10, but there?s no guarantee of that.
