WATCH: Kanye West Rants About Grammy Snubs

When Kanye West decides to speak his mind, it's usually controversial -- but it's always entertaining. Right before he spilled the beans that he and Kim Kardashian were expecting a baby, the rapper broke into a philosophical rant during his Saturday night show in Atlantic City, talking about fashion, Lady Gaga, Twitter death threats, and more. Watch it below (warning: strong language), or scroll down for the highlights!

Tech's biggest misfires of 2012

You can't win 'em all, right? Sure, 2012 saw its share of high points, but there were plenty of missteps along the way from companies both large and small. Unfinished products, serial delays, lawsuits and layoffs -- after the break, we've got a list of some of the not-so-pretty moments in tech.

2nd International Reggae Poster Contest 2013 | Open for Entries

?

2nd International Reggae Poster Contest 2013!

Theme: Toward a Reggae Hall of Fame: Celebrating Great Jamaican Music.

The organizers of the International Reggae Poster Contest (IRPC) are pleased to announce a new call for poster entries starting on December 23, 2012, and closing on March 30, 2013. Winning posters will be selected by a jury of international design professionals and will be published in a catalogue/book, exhibited and auctioned. This contest builds on the 1st highly successful 2012 poster contest, with exhibitions held in Kingston, Jamaica (read about here), and Athens, Greece (read about here), and Spain (Rototom Sunsplash 2012). This inaugural contest received over 1,142 outstanding posters from 80 countries with Alon Braier of Israel winning the top prize for his iconic poster titled ?Roots of Dub.?

The founders of the International Reggae Poster Contest are Michael Thompson, a Jamaican living in the United States, and Maria Papaefstathiou from Athens, Greece. They are confident the 2013 contest will receive even more submissions than the 2012 contest by reaching out to more designers across the globe to encourage increased participation and extend the contest?s global footprint.

Reggae music is one of the world?s few living folk music genres. It has remained incredibly popular and spontaneously generated by people?s experiences, emotions and traditions. Rising from humble Jamaican roots, Reggae has grown to influence many cultures in its wake and has left an irrefutable mark on entertainment.

The 2nd International Reggae Poster Contest 2013 seeks to build positive awareness for Reggae music and celebrate the global achievements of Reggae and its impact on the world. In this contest, the term Reggae encompasses all popular Jamaican musical genres: Ska, Rocksteady, Roots Reggae, Dub, Dancehall and the unique Jamaican Sound System. This initiative will rebrand the creative visual aesthetic of reggae on a global scale. The 2013 contest promises to achieve outstanding results in quality designs from both contestants and contributors with more exhibitions and auctions to establish a Frank Gehry designed Reggae Hall of Fame Museum and performance center in Kingston, Jamaica, and to raise funds for our two charities: the Alpha Boys? School and HELP Jamaica!

Our main objective?the establishment of a Frank Gehry designed Reggae Hall of Fame Museum and performance center in Kingston, Jamaica?intends to encapsulate all the achievements of Reggae in contemporary iconic architecture. The Reggae Hall of Fame will be a monument to the achievements of Jamaica?s popular music and culture. The mission of The Reggae Hall of Fame will be to collect, conserve, and exhibit the treasures of Reggae music as well as narrate the stories from a variety of perspectives in the context of the music?s history, and reach a broad and diverse audience internationally. This museum will be the world?s first museum of this magnitude, celebrating the living heritage of Reggae music.

The Reggae Poster Contest will also raise funds to support the amazing work of a historic and inspiring Jamaican institution, the Alpha Boys? School. The Alpha Boys? School is a jewel in the center of Kingston, shining on Jamaica through the music its graduates create that spreads throughout the world. Alpha?s decades of success with young Jamaicans entering Alpha raw and eager to learn, and emerging as world-renown musicians is testimony to Alpha?s success. Without this amazing institution and its successful music program, Ska, Rocksteady, Dub, and Roots Reggae music may not have been invented. The first IRPC exhibition and auction held at the National Gallery of Jamaica in November 2012 raised over US $6,000 for the Alpha Boys? School. We hope to raise more needed funds through other auctions planned in Jamaica and internationally in 2013.

In 2013 we will add a second charity to our effort, HELP Jamaica!, a non-profit organization (registered 2008 in Berlin, Germany). This organization was established to support independent educational institutions in the poorest areas of Jamaica and provide primarily children and young people with free access to books, learning materials, and computers under the guidance of trained personnel.

Oil boom puts stress on western ND postal service

MINOT, North Dakota ? Rapid growth in western North Dakota's oil fields has put stress on postal service in the area.

The Minot Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/W7DTlN ) that the U.S. Postal Service has struggled to provide adequate staffing for post office in some oil-boom towns where populations have grown substantially in recent years. That has led to complaints about long lines at post office windows, late mail, returned mail and undelivered mail.

Gretchen Stenehjem with First International Bank in Watford City says businesses are having problems in getting mail in a timely manner.

Pete Nowacki, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service in Minneapolis, says staffing is a huge issue for post offices in the area. He says it's difficult to get additional staff to keep up with the growth.

Cyborg cockroach does what you tell it on TwitterThere have been remote-controlled cyborg bugs before ? but now, possibly for the first time, you can tell a cockroach what to do via Twitter. Commands seem to consist mainly of "turn left" and "turn right," and it can only accept one command every 30 seconds. Plus it's only connected for short periods at a time. Eric's Online Diary: Solving some family history mysteries

His was a hard life and he died at the age of 49 from pneumonia. Already a widower, his six children who had been sent to a children?s home in Doncaster, were now orphaned.

My mother had told me many stories of life in the orphanage, of the cruel matron (Mrs Nurse). She had been 14 when her father died and she?d had the hope that soon, she would have been able to leave Stanley House (the children?s home) and become the carer at their house in Adwick Le Street, looking after the children, while her father worked.

As it happened, her father died and my mother was placed in service at a large house in Yorkshire where she worked until joining the WRNS during the Second World War and training as a cook.

I?d asked my mother quite a lot about her father, but I?m not sure how much she had known about his life (he died when she was 14) and she died when I was 11 so there?s only so much you?ll tell and 11-year-old. Later, I took the opportunity to ask my Uncle Dick (cousin Jennifer?s dad). He knew a few things, but was a couple of years younger than my mother and would have had even less opportunity to talk to his father about his past.

So there were lots of untested stories about Richard Gibson Little, which Mike has summarised as:

1. ?His birth and death registrations show his name only as Richard Little, so why during his lifetime does he use the middle name of Gibson? His army records and medals from the First World War also show him as Richard Gibson Little.

2. ?Did the name Gibson come from the maiden name of his first wife? This was a story I?d heard from my mother and may have passed on to Mike. The story was that he?d fallen in love with and married the daughter of a family of wealthy shopkeepers from Carlisle. They had disapproved and when the woman died in childbirth, he?d left Cumberland and gone to fight in France, taking her maiden name as his middle name. A similar story, with variances was told by my uncle, Dick Little.

3. ?Who were Richard?s parents? Was his father called Joseph? Online research had not been helpful, creating more questions and no answers.

4. ?Did a maiden aunt bring him up after his mother was said to have died three or four years after his birth?

5. ?On Richard?s death, it was said there was a ?father? who declined through solicitors, to take responsibility of Richard?s children who remained in Stanley House, the orphanage?

6. ?Richard?s ?father? was said to have moved to Cheshire, remarried and had two sons with his second wife.

7. ?Richard'ssecond wife, my grandmother Nelly Beatrice Burrows, descended from a Scottish connection.

Mike has been interested in family history for some years and is quite experienced, so I was pleased that he took on the task of trying to find out the truth. His research started with Richard?s death, which is always a sobering event.

The Death Certificate shows he died of Broncho Pneumonia on 15 December 1937 at Springwell House, Doncaster Urban District, aged 49. ?At the time he was living at Village Street, Adwick-le-Street about five miles north-west of Doncaster. By researching the web site www.workhouses.org.uk/Doncaster/ it seems Springwell House built in 1897 in Balby, had been the local Workhouse and it doesn't sound a good place to be. ?A quote from this web site says:

?After the Local Government Act, 1929 abolished the Poor Law Guardians from 1 April 1930, responsibility for public assistance, and the former workhouse, fell upon Doncaster County Borough Council. The council renamed the premises Springwell House Public Assistance Institution. The buildings continued to function as a local authority hospital and provide accommodation for the destitute and for those who in the language of the period were classed as 'mentally deficient'. Initially, because of the 'poor quality of the accommodation' it was proposed not to adopt Springwell House as a hospital within the National Health Service. However, in the event the premises were taken over by the NHS and were designated as the Western Hospital in 1950. The hospital was used mostly for maternity and geriatric patients. It was demolished in 1974 and the site redeveloped for a primary school and private housing.?

Consequently, we can reasonably assume that Richard was a patient at Springwell House due to the medical condition from which he subsequently died.

The death certificate records his age as 49, suggesting a birth in 1888. ?As the family indicated that Richard was born in Cumberland, a search of the Birth Records enabled Mike to obtain a birth certificate in the name of Richard Little born 9 April 1888, a date that matches the family-quoted date.

This certificate records the birth at Ruckcroft, near Ainstable, a small hamlet to the north-east of Penrith, his mother being Margaret Little (nee Lowis), a charwoman, who appears to be illiterate as she had to make her ?mark? in completing the registration.

No father?s name is shown on the certificate with the space provided being struck out. ?At the end of the 19th century this action by the Registrar generally indicated that the father was unknown or that the mother was not prepared to declare it and, therefore, Richard seems to have been illegitimate.

Mike then began tracing Richard in the census records available within his lifetime, with the following results:

1891 ? shown as Richard G [suggesting he was already named Gibson] aged two; a nurse child; living at Cross House, Becks, Ainstable with Anthony and Mary Sander. ?

Initial research did not produce any firm connection between the Sanders and Margaret Little (nee Lowis) other than Anthony Sanders being the son of Joseph Sander, Registrar, who registered Margaret?s birth. Becks is within a mile of Richard?s place of birth and west and south of Ruckcroft.

1901 ? shown again as ?Richard G? aged 12, this time living as son with Joseph and Margaret Barnes at Ruckcroft. ?Joseph was an agricultural labourer but in later life became a corn miller. Joseph?s parents, and eventually Joseph, were millers at Dale Mill, Ainstable.

1911 ? Richard cannot be found with or without his G, but would have been 22 years old. He served in the Great War with the York and Lancaster regiment which mainly recruited from the south Yorkshire (Hallamshire) area, so he may have moved there for reasons of work. Easy for a single man to slip through the census.

Turning back to the 1901 census, Mike researched the Barnes family and found that Margaret, Joseph?s wife, was Margaret Little on their marriage certificate. She was shown as a widow and her father as Henry Lowis. Was Margaret Barnes, the same person as Margaret Little, nee Lowis, the mother of Richard? Had she not died as the family thought and had she taken him back into her care once she had a secure station in life?

Mike needed to establish the real connection between Margaret Little/Lowis and Joseph Barnes, so he searched Cumberland Records for marriages of a Margaret Lowis (and alternatives such as Lewis and Lowes) and found a marriage to a John Little in 1871. In the 1881 census, Margaret and John were living at Castle Dyke, Ainstable, with their sons Henry Lowes Little (b.1871) and John Richard Little (b.1879). The census entry immediately prior to this family was that of a Henry and Jane Lowis. Tracing Henry and Jane back through the census records confirms that Margaret was their daughter, as did a copy of her birth certificate giving her birth as 11 April 1851 to parents of Henry Lowis and Jane Lowis (nee Gibson).

To get closer to the Lowis/Little connection, in June 2012 Mike spent three days visiting the Carlisle Archives to examine specific Parish Records and found baptism records for Margaret (8 February 1858 at Ainstable ie seven years after her birth) and most of her nine siblings. In addition, he found Parish Records confirming her two marriages to John Little (11 Nov 1871) and Joseph Barnes (28 Oct 1891). ?Both men were shown as bachelors and Margaret Little as widow when she married Barnes. The 1911 census shows there were no children to this marriage.

So it looked as if Richard was the son of John and Margaret, explaining his surname and with the Gibson connection coming from Margaret?s mother?s maiden name. Margaret was clearly quite keen to keep her family surnames in memory because she?d used her own maiden name as the middle name for her first child. Her husband John had died, Richard was cared for by foster parents until Margaret got back on her feet and married again, then he was brought up by his mum and stepfather - all explained (or was it?).

Why was John Little not shown as Richard?s father on his birth certificate and what had happened to her other two sons? Mike subsequently traced John Little?s death to Sleetburn Colliery, Brandon and Byshottles just east of Durham on 8 January 1885 - Richard wasn?t born until April 1888, three years later. John Little could not have been his father. ?

Like a lot of family history trails, this one was throwing up as many questions as answers.

One thing that is an obvious change in social history in the second half of the 19th Century is that people were far more mobile. One of my great grandparents moved from rural Norfolk to the bustle of Liverpool, another moved from Norfolk to East Yorkshire; there was emigration to Canada and there was migration to London. People that had worked on the land for generations were being pushed off by mechanisation and they were also able to earn better wages by working in industry.

The fact that John and Margaret Little moved across the Pennines from near Penrith to Durham is not such a big leap. Durham was a thriving coal-mining area and would be hungry for workers. The connection with Durham seems to have come about because Margaret?s younger sister, Sarah, married John Healey and they moved to Co Durham where John Healey worked in the mines. I guess Margaret and John heard there was good money to be earned and followed them.

So, upon Richard?s birth in 1888, Margaret had been a widow for more than three years. We know she was working as a charwoman (cleaner) and Mike was able to confirm that her two sons Henry and John were living with their father?s family.

Mike has not been able to find a baptism record for Richard. He has also searched the official Bastardy Records for the period to see who may have taken financial responsibility for Richard until Margaret married Joseph Barnes, but these did not extend beyond 1874 and so proved fruitless. ?In the April 1891 census he was, of course, being cared for by Anthony and Mary Sander.

So who might Richard?s father have been and what would the Sanders? motive have been for looking after him?

Anthony Sander, who was caring for Richard as a two-year-old in 1891, was the son of Joseph Sander b.1802. In the 1851 census, this Joseph Sander shows as farmer of 65 acres and also a Registrar of Births and Deaths, living at The Vicarage, Ainstable with his wife Ann, a daughter and four sons, including Anthony (b.1831) and another called Joseph (b.1836) in Ainstable. Anthony married Mary and they also had a son called Joseph b.1867 in Ainstable.

You will recall that family lore states that Richard?s father was called Joseph, which may have been Joseph Barnes (his stepfather) but there are now a few other Josephs who have stepped into the limelight. Could either the son or grandson of the original Joseph Sander, both also called Joseph, be Richard?s father?

The first Joseph (b.1836) can be discounted as he died in 1869.

Anthony?s son, Joseph (b.1867) left home between 1881 and 1891 moving to Benwell, north of Gateshead, to become a crane driver. He was living with Richard Pearson and his family who had all been born in Ainstable and this was probably the connection that took him there. By the 1901 census, he had moved to Newcastle upon Tyne, become a Bank Porter and married Jane Chalder in 1893. ?She came from Alston near to Ainstable. In the 1911 census the family were still in Newcastle and Joseph was now a Bank Messenger.

The question is whether this Joseph was Richard?s natural father. This can only be answered if the Sander family can be traced and they have the knowledge.?He was certainly of an age to have been the father and the connection of Ainstable between Joseph and Margaret is clear. ?Further, it could be possible that Joseph?s parents, Anthony and Mary, cared for Richard as a ?family? son as Margaret was unable to provide financially for Richard.

This seems a good explanation of why Anthony and Mary Sander were looking after Richard. Perhaps Margaret returned to Ainstable from Durham a widow with two sons. The Little family took in the sons and Sanders offered her some cleaning work where she caught the eye of young Joseph ...

Perhaps a deal was struck by the grandparents to help Margaret out in return for keeping their son?s name ?guilt free??

Joseph Sander, who may have been my great grandfather (there?s no proof, but some circumstantial evidence) died in 1932 aged 65.

After the 1901 census, there?s no trace of Richard Gibson Little (my grandfather) until he pops up as a soldier in the Great War. The regiment he joins is a small one which recruited from a distinct area and so it?s quite likely that he?d gone to South Yorkshire seeking work and had joined up soon after the outbreak of war. He?d been wounded and sent home for a spell. He seems to have gone ?home? to Cumberland, met Annie Elizabeth Braithwaite and married her on 20 September 1917 at Ousby ? a village south-east of Ruckcroft and Ainstable. ?

There is no father?s name shown on this marriage certificate, suggesting that Richard was illegitimate. Clearly, Richard did not take the name Gibson from Annie but certainly from his grandmother, Jane Lowis, whose maiden name was Gibson. ?Sadly, the story about his first love dying was true as Annie died on 9 November 1919 during childbirth and there is no reference of the child surviving ? it was not made compulsory to register a stillbirth until 1927. ?My Aunt Margaret (Margaret Smith) has the prayer book given to Annie on her confirmation on 12 May 1910 by the Rector at Ousby.

Richard also shows himself as Gibson on his second marriage, to my grandmother Nelly Beatrice Burrows. ?Nelly?s birth certificate shows she was born on 6 Apr 1894 at Low Catton, Pocklington, east of York. ?Her father and his family come from Burston, Norfolk and her mother?s family are East Yorkshire based (both well documented), so no Scottish connection here.

Richard?s marriage certificate to Nelly records his father as Joseph Little. This is most likely to be his late stepfather Joseph Barnes. Mike thinks that Richard gave the name Joseph and occupation miller to the Rector and he had incorrectly written his name as Joseph Little instead of Joseph Barnes. Joseph had, of course, taken responsibility for and acted as Richard?s father following his marriage to Margaret, so he deserved some credit. Probably, no attempt was made to correct the mistake as Richard had other things on his mind (it was his wedding day) and both Joseph Barnes and his mother Margaret had died a few years earlier.

The question of Joseph Barnes being quoted as ?father? in official documents such as the census, is common during the 19th and early 20th centuries when viewed in the light of second marriages by one partner; i.e. Margaret ? Joseph was a bachelor on marriage to Margaret.?Margaret died of Stomach Cancer on the 30 May 1916 at Ousby Mill, Ousby, as the widow of Joseph Barnes, corn miller ? Joseph had died in early 1915 in Ousby. ?Mike visited St Luke?s Church, Ousby and with the help of a graveyard plan in the church, found and photographed the adjacent sites of Margaret and Joseph?s graves although no headstones are erected.

Sadly, after Nelly?s death in 1933 (at the age of 39), all of their children, except John, were taken into Stanley House Children?s Home run by Doncaster Council. ?Upon Richard?s death in 1937 family lore states that a ?father? (grandfather) had declined to take responsibility for the children. Who might have turned their back on the family?

The only father figure still living at Richard?s death was John Burrows, Nelly?s father and the children?s grandfather. At this time he was 76 years old, a widower, and understandably unlikely to be willing (or able) to take in the children. He died in Doncaster in 1940.

So where has this research left those family mysteries?

Mike has established:

? ?Richard was illegitimate, with no natural father established. He clearly was given the name Gibson from his grandmother, Jane Lowis (nee Gibson).

? ?His mother was Margaret Lowis born 1851; died 1916 who married John Little (died 1885) and later married Joseph Barnes with whom she brought up her son.

? ?Richard?s natural father cannot be determined and, whilst I am happy to point the finger at Joseph Sander, Mike thinks it is unlikely. He thinks that if this was the case Margaret and Joseph would have married before or shortly after Richard?s birth as, being single, neither had any reason not to do so. Bearing in mind that Joseph?s grandfather was the local Registrar, a man of standing in the community, to legitimise the birth would have been a priority. Of course, this doesn?t explain why the Sanders looked after Richard as a young child.

? ?If Joseph Barnes was the natural father the same argument (no restrictions on marrying) hold good, so why wait three years. Based on Richard and Nelly?s marriage certificate it was Joseph Barnes who family lore believe to be Joseph Little, father of Richard. This is supported by the father?s occupation being shown as miller on the certificate.

? ?Nelly Burrows was certainly not Scottish - her family roots are in Norfolk and Staffordshire.

? ?The question of a father moving to Cheshire can be discounted.

? ?There was no maiden aunt and Richard?s mother did not die until much later when he was an adult. Perhaps the Sanders were the maiden aunt?

If you?ve stuck with this posting to the bitter end, well done. Some family history research provides rollicking good stories like the frontiersman Zachariah Burrows, other stories are rather more forensic. Thanks again to Mike Towers for his diligence - this was a complicated one to unravel and there remains just enough uncertainty to keep that murky air of mystery that has made Richard Gibson Little so intriguing to us all.

If anyone wants access to the family tree just mail me and if anyone knows who my great grandfather really was then I?d love to know!

Alistair Overeem Makes Light Of Junior Dos Santos' Face After UFC 155

Alistair Overeem Makes Light Of Junior Dos Santos' Face After UFC 155 It appears that Alistair Overeem-Junior dos Santos fight everybody was looking forward to will have to wait a little while longer. Dos Santos dropped the UFC heavyweight title Saturday night to Cain Velasquez, and Overeem didn't waste a second before making a few comments about "Cigano."

Overeem and dos Santos were originally set to met earlier this year, but the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion failed his pre-fight drug test. Dos Santos has made a handful of remarks concerning Overeem and the failed test.

Overeem is set to meet Antonio Silva in February at UFC 156: Aldo Vs. Edgar, with a title shot likely going to the winner. After watching Velasquez pick dos Santos apart Saturday evening, Overeem took to Twitter.

"JDS looks pretty lol," Overeem posted. "Great fight though. Aaaand, its all over... Great fight, great performance by Cain. Nice:)"

Overeem had predicted that Velasquez would defeat dos Santos when asked earlier this year. Overeem had his suspension expire a few days ago, and is slated to go before the Nevada Athletic Commission in early January to acquire his fight license.

In 2012, we turned to Wikipedia to learn about ... Facebook?

16 hrs.

Unlike most major Internet brands, Wikipedia had no year-end top-10 list to share. But that's not to say there isn't a list of most viewed Wikipedia articles of 2012. It took a software engineer with a bit of spare time to gather up the data, and share the results, equal parts predictable and off-the-wall.?What does this list say about us?

Based on?Johan Gunnarsson's analysis of Wikipedia logs, it seems that?the most viewed articles on the English version of Wikipedia are lined up as follows:

  • 1. Facebook - 32,647,942 views
  • 2.?Wiki -?29,613,759?views
  • 3.?Deaths in 2012 -?25,418,587?views
  • 4.?One Direction -?22,351,637?views
  • 5.?The Avengers (2012 film) -?22,268,644?views
  • 6.?Fifty Shades of Grey -?21,779,423?views
  • 7.?2012 phenomenon -?20,619,920?views
  • 8.?The Dark Knight Rises -?18,882,885?views
  • 9.?Google -?18,508,719?views
  • 10.?The Hunger Games -?18,431,626?views

While we're not surprised to see iconic pop culture phenomena like musical sensation One Direction, the all-star movie?"The?Avengers," the risque literary?trilogy "Fifty Shades of Grey" and of course the?inescapable "Hunger Games" series?appear,?we did scratch our heads about Facebook and Google, and ... "Wiki"?

Wikimedia spokesman Jay Walsh explained the popularity of these items to All Things D's Liz Gannes as likely being due to users who might type "Facebook" or similar into a search engine built into "their browsers intending to go to the site and end up on Wikipedia."?Either that, he says, or there's simply "general, high-level interest and curiosity" about the history of some of these websites and services.

We'll buy the accidental typing explanation over the "high-level of?interest" one.

While most of the top 100 most-viewed?English Wikipedia articles centered around pop culture and current events, some articles raise eyebrows for feeling a bit out of place. Entries on the Illuminati (No. 33), elocution (No. 34)?and g-forces (No. 83)?cropped up on the heels of expected entries like Mitt Romney (No. 22) and?Justin Bieber (No. 25).

The more immature individuals among us may find it amusing that entries on sex (No. 18) and human penis size (No. 82) made it into the list of 100?most viewed.?Android fanboys may flaunt the fact that an article about the mobile operating system hit the list at No. 70, while no entries about iOS made it into the top 100. (Though Steve Jobs did come in at No. 64.)

At least some people were using Wikipedia for its intended purpose, to cheat on homework assignments: Historical topics from?Albert Einstein (No. 98)?to the Hatfield-McCoy feud (No. 91) pepper the list.

When looking at the?most viewed articles in languages other than English, we find that the obsession with major Web properties and pop culture extends beyond their idiom of origin. Facebook led the Spanish top 10, which also includes One Direction. German language readers were particularly interested in the?TV shows "How I Met Your Mother," "The Big Bang Theory," "Two And A Half Men," and "Game Of Thrones" ? all which made it into their top 10.

And speaking of Bieber,?those with an irrational dislike for the teen?heartthrob may find it comforting to know that he?only made the top 10 in Norwegian and Danish. He failed to reach single digits in any other language, and sits at No. 25 on the list of the most viewed English Wikipedia articles.

"Gangnam Style," the ear-worm that beat Bieber's "Baby" to?a billion views on YouTube, appears to have only made it onto one top-100 list?? the English one ? taking the No. 21 spot with a mere?13,129,876 views.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Indian gang-rape victim dies in Singapore hospital

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Shocked Indians on Saturday were mourning the death of a woman who was gang-raped and beaten on a bus in New Delhi nearly two weeks ago in an ordeal that galvanized people to demand greater protection for women from sexual violence.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was aware of the emotions the attack has stirred, adding it was up to all Indians to ensure that the young woman's death will not have been in vain.

The victim "passed away peacefully" early Saturday at Mount Elizabeth hospital in Singapore with her family and officials of the Indian Embassy by her side, Dr. Kevin Loh, the chief executive of the hospital, said in a statement.

After 10 days at a hospital in New Delhi, the Indian capital, the woman was brought Thursday to Mount Elizabeth, which specializes in multi-organ transplants. Loh said the woman had been in extremely critical condition since Thursday, and by late Friday her condition had taken a turn for the worse, with her vital signs deteriorating.

"Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days," Loh said. "She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds, but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome."

The woman and a male friend, who have not been identified, were traveling on a bus in New Delhi after watching a film on the evening of Dec. 16 when they were attacked by six men who raped her. The men beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into the woman's body, resulting in severe organ damage. Both were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.

Indian police have arrested six people in connection with the attack, which left the victim with severe internal injuries, a lung infection and brain damage. She also suffered from a heart attack while in the hospital in New Delhi.

Indian High Commissioner, or ambassador, T.C.A. Raghavan told reporters that the scale of the injuries the woman suffered was "very grave" and in the end "proved too much."

He said arrangements were being made to return her body to India later Saturday.

The frightening nature of the crime shocked Indians, who have come out in the thousands for almost daily demonstrations.

As news of the victim's death reached New Delhi early Saturday, hundreds of policemen sealed off the high-security India Gate area, where the seat of India's government is located, in anticipation of more protests. The area is home to the president's palace, the prime minister's office and key defense, external affairs and home ministries.

The area had seen battles between protesters and police for days after the attack.

Ten metro stations in the vicinity also were closed Saturday, said Rajan Bhagat, the New Delhi police spokesman.

Police were allowing people to assemble at the Jantar Mantar and Ramlila grounds, the main areas allotted for protests in New Delhi, Bhagat said.

Mourners began gathering at Jantar Mantar to express their grief and demand stronger protection for women and the death penalty for rape, which is now punishable by a maximum of life imprisonment. Women face daily harassment across India, ranging from catcalls on the streets, groping and touching in public transport to rape.

They put a wreath studded with white flowers on the road, lit a candle and sat around it in a silent tribute to the young woman. Members of a theatre group nearby played small tambourine and sang songs urging the society to wake up and end discrimination against women.

Dipali, a working woman who uses one name, said the rape victim deserved justice. "I hope it never happens again to any girl," she said.

Dozens of students of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi marched silently to the bus stop from where the rape victim and her friend had boarded the bus on Dec. 16. They carried placards reading "She is not with us but her story must awaken us."

Nehra Kaul Mehra, a young Indian studying urban and gender policing at Colombia University in the United States, said "We come from a feudal and patriarchal set-up where we value men more than women."

"We kill daughters before they are born. Those who live are fed less, educated less and segregated from boys," she said with a black band of protest around her mouth.

Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director of Human Rights Watch, said the woman's death was a sobering reminder of the widespread sexual violence in India.

"The outrage now should lead to law reform that criminalizes all forms of sexual assault, strengthens mechanisms for implementation and accountability, so that the victims are not blamed and humiliated," Ganguly said.

Prime Minister Singh said he understood the angry reaction to the attack and that he hoped all Indians would work together to make appropriate changes.

"These are perfectly understandable reactions from a young India and an India that genuinely desires change," Singh said in a statement Saturday. "It would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channel these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action."

He said the government was examining the penalties for crimes such as rape "to enhance the safety and security of women."

"I hope that the entire political class and civil society will set aside narrow sectional interests and agendas to help us all reach the end that we all desire ? making India a demonstrably better and safer place for women to live in," Singh said.

Mamta Sharma, head of the state-run National Commission for Women, said the "time has come for strict laws" to stop violence against women. "The society has to change its mindset to end crimes against women," she said.

The tragedy has forced India to confront the reality that sexually assaulted women are often blamed for the crime, forcing them to keep quiet and discouraging them from reporting it to authorities for fear of exposing their families to ridicule. Police often refuse to accept complaints from those who are courageous enough to report the rapes, and the rare prosecutions that reach courts drag on for years.

Indian attitudes toward rape are so entrenched that even politicians and opinion makers have often suggested that women should not go out at night or wear clothes that might be seen provocative.

On Friday, Abhijit Mukherjee, a national lawmaker and the son of India's president, apologized for calling the protesters "highly dented and painted" women who go from discos to demonstrations.

"I tender my unconditional apology to all the people whose sentiments got hurt," he told NDTV news.

Several Indian celebrities reacted with sadness Saturday over the woman's death. Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan tweeted, "Her body has passed away, but her soul shall forever stir our hearts."

Separately, authorities in Punjab state took action Thursday when an 18-year-old woman killed herself by drinking poison a month after she told police she was gang-raped.

State authorities suspended one police officer and fired two others on accusations they delayed investigating and taking action in the case. The three accused in the rape were arrested only on Thursday night, a month after the crime was reported.

"This is a very sensitive crime, I have taken it very seriously," said Paramjit Singh Gill, a top police officer in the city of Patiala.

The Press Trust of India reported that the woman was raped Nov. 13 and reported the attack to police Nov. 27. But police harassed the girl, asked her embarrassing questions and took no action against the accused, PTI reported, citing police sources.

Authorities in the eastern state of Chhattisgarh also suspended a police officer on accusations he refused to register a rape complaint from a woman who said she had been attacked by a driver.

Apple withdraws patent claim against Samsung's Galaxy S III mini

Apple's patent claim against Samsung's Galaxy S III mini is no more, with Cupertino citing the phone's lacking availability in the US for the amendment to its original November filing. In the ongoing litigation between the two electronics giants, Samsung argued that it's Galaxy S III mini didn't warrant inclusion in the latest volley of Samsung devices Apple wants added to its patent lawsuit; Apple apparently agreed, and is thusly withdrawing its claim against that particular device. The argument also highlights the sad news that the S III mini won't join Samsung's Galaxy lineup in the US.

An agreement filing spotted by Reuters from a San Jose, CA. US District Court revealed today's news, coming just days after Judge Lucy Koh dismissed a request to permanently ban sales on several Samsung devices. It's unclear if the other Samsung devices Apple asked to be added to the ongoing case are approved yet by the court, but we can certainly count the S III mini out for the time being.

TigerLogic Acquires Storycode For Up To $7.25M To Bolster How Brands Reach Mobile Users

Screen Shot 2012-12-28 at 9.03.18 PMTigerLogic, a company with a market cap of about $56 million that provides data management and app development solutions for enterprises, said it agreed to acquire Portland mobile developer Storycode for up to $7.25 million in cash and stock today. The Irvine-based company says it will integrate Storycode’s technology into its social visualization platform called Postano. Yes, “social visualization” platform is a little vague, but basically Postano lets brands embed widgets with content from social networks on their sites. They also offer an internal dashboard that lets clients monitor what people are saying about them on Twitter or Facebook, and they can also help with creating custom Facebook tabs and apps. Storycode has a mobile app publishing platform that media companies like Thomson Reuters, USA Today, NBC and CBS use to create iPhone and iPad apps. The mobile publishing platform will plug right into TigerLogic’s Postano product. According to an SEC filing, each share of Storycode’s stock will be converted into $6.75 million worth of TigerLogic’s stock. On top of that, a single share of preferred stock in Storycode will get converted into the right to receive $250,000. TigerLogic is also giving Storycode $100,000 in bridge financing and is taking on up to $150,000 in the company’s liabilities. Storycode actually has been through one previous acquisition. It was previously called FreeRange Communications after it spun out of Handmark in 2011. The company changed its name to Storycode last May after acquiring a Portland-based mobile agency.

Storm blows through East, 200,000 in the dark

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ? A muted version of a winter storm that has killed more than a dozen people across the eastern half of the country plodded across the Northeast on Thursday, trapping airliners in snow or mud and frustrating travelers still trying to return home after Christmas.

The storm, which was blamed for at least 16 deaths farther south and west, brought plenty of wind, rain and snow to the Northeast when it blew in Wednesday night. Lights generally remained on and cars mostly stayed on the road, unlike many harder-hit places including Arkansas, where 200,000 homes and businesses lost power.

By afternoon, the precipitation had stopped in parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, though snow continued to fall in upstate New York and northern New England. Parts of snow-savvy New Hampshire expected as much as 18 inches.

Dale Lamprey, who was clearing off the sidewalk outside the legislative office building in Concord, already had several hours of shoveling under his belt by 8:30 a.m. Thursday and didn't expect it to get much better.

"I'm going to be shoveling all day, just trying to keep up with the snow," he said. "Which is impossible."

The Northeast's heaviest snowfall was expected to be in northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and inland sections of several New England states before the storm heads into Canada on Friday, National Weather Service spokesman David Roth said.

While the East Coast's largest cities ? New York, Philadelphia and Boston ? saw mostly high winds and cold rain, other areas experienced a messy mix of rain and snow that slowed commuters and those still heading home from holiday trips. Some inbound flights were delayed in Philadelphia and New York's LaGuardia, but the weather wasn't leading to delays at other major East Coast airports.

On New York's Long Island, a Southwest Airlines jet bound for Tampa, Fla., veered off a taxiway and got stuck in mud Thursday morning. Officials said there were no injuries to the 129 passengers and five crew members. Though the area received heavy rain overnight, Southwest spokesman Paul Flanigan said it wasn't clear whether that played a role.

In Pittsburgh, a flight that landed safely during the storm Wednesday night got stuck in several inches of snow on the tarmac about two hours. The American Airlines flight arrived between 8 and 9 p.m., but then ran over a snow patch and got stuck.

Earlier, the storm system spawned tornadoes on Christmas along the Gulf Coast, startling people like Bob and Sherry Sims of Mobile, Ala., who had just finished dinner.

"We heard that very distinct sound, like a freight train," said Bob Sims, who lost electricity but was grateful that he fared better than neighbors whose roofs were peeled away and porches smashed by falling trees. In Georgiana, Ala., an 81-year-old man died Wednesday, a day after a tree fell on his home, emergency officials said.

Deaths from wind-toppled trees also were reported in Texas and Louisiana, but car crashes caused most of the fatalities. Two people were killed in Kentucky crashes, a New York man was killed after his pickup truck skidded on an icy road in northwest Pennsylvania, and an Ohio teenager died after losing control of her car and smashing into an oncoming snowplow.

In Arkansas, where two people died in a head-on collision, some of those who lost electricity could be without it for as long as a week because of snapped poles and wires after ice and 10 inches of snow coated power lines, said the state's largest utility, Entergy Arkansas.

Farther east, the storm knocked out power to more than 7,000 homes and businesses in Maryland, and utilities were preparing for more outages as the wind picked up. In New Jersey, gusts of more than 70 mph were recorded along the coast, and the weather service issued a flood warning for some coastal areas. There were about 800 power outages in Vermont, but only a handful in neighboring New Hampshire.

Schools on break and workers taking holiday vacations meant that many people could avoid messy commutes, but those who had to travel were urged to avoid it.

Few truckers were stopping into a TravelCenters of America truck stop in Willington, Conn., near the Massachusetts border early Thursday. Usually 20 to 30 an hour stop in overnight, but high winds and slushy roads had cut that to two to three people an hour.

"A lot of people are staying off the road," said Louis Zalewa, 31, who works there selling gasoline and staffing the store. "I think people are being smart."

Huawei Ascend D2 reportedly spied while switched on, teases an upscale look

Huawei has already confirmed that we're going to see its extra-large Ascend D2 at CES, but that doesn't mean a sneak peek is unwelcome. ITHome is more than willing to sate our curiosity with a set of photos that purportedly show a fully functional version of the 5-inch smartphone. In a sense, we know what to expect from the software: the D2 appears to be using the same customized Android layer as the even larger Ascend Mate, just without that fifth column of icons. The shots do, however, suggest that Huawei is going for a design as premium-looking on the outside as it is high-powered on the inside. Not much else is known, but we'll likely understand Huawei's fuller ambitions in Las Vegas next month.

Update: Our brethren over at Engadget Chinese also received the same batch of photos, and they sure look legit.

Implant Dentist Stratford CT, Health Problems Caused By ...

dentiststratfordct.com Implant dentist Stratford CT, Dr. Mark Samuels, talks about periodontal disease. A periodontal disease attacks the gums and can vary from simple gum inflammation to serious diseases that can result in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost. Our mouths are full of bacteria. These bacteria constantly form a sticky, colorless plaque on teeth. Brushing and flossing can help get rid of plaque. Periodontal disease is divided is two stages. Gingivitis is bacteria caused by inflammation of the gums. Periodontitis occurs when gingivitis is not treated. Gums pull away from the teeth and form spaces called ?pockets? that become infected. The body?s immune system fights the bacteria as the plaque spreads and grows below the gum line. Natural response to infection starts to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. If not treated, the bones, gums and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed.
