After Florida, the Carolinas are the most attractive Southern destinations for retirees.
The most popular retirement destination in the 13 Southern states is located in Florida.
The same is true of the second-rated place on the regional list. And the third, the fourth, the fifth - all the way to the 13th.
On Numbers has developed a six-part formula to gauge the relative popularity of 233 Southern metropolitan and micropolitan areas among persons who are 65 or older. (Learn more about the retirement study's methodology.)
First place belongs to Sebring, Fla., which is situated in the south-central part of the state, roughly 80 miles south of Orlando.
Nearly a third of Sebring's residents (32.1 percent) belong to the 65-plus club, dwarfing the national average of 13.3 percent. And almost all of those seniors (91.7 percent of them) are transplanted Floridians, having moved to Sebring from some other state or country.
The 12 runners-up are all in Florida, led by No. 2 Bradenton-Sarasota, No. 3 The Villages, No. 4 Naples-Marco Island and No. 5 Sebastian-Vero Beach.
Top-to-bottom rankings of the 233 Southern markets, which include Texas markets, are displayed in the following database. Use the tab to winnow the list to a single state, or merely click Search to view the full regional standings.
On Numbers' formula is designed to identify those markets that have sizable and rapidly growing populations of senior citizens. Regional reports are being released each day this week (click here for yesterday's story about the East), followed by complete national rankings on Friday.
The Carolinas are the most attractive Southern destinations for retirees who resist the temptations of Florida.
