Gayle hails Darren Sammy?s leadership ? Cricket News Update

Talismanic West Indies opener Chris Gayle, on Saturday heaped praise on Darren Sammy?s leadership saying the St Lucia all-rounder has improved a lot as captain over the last couple of years.

"Sammy has been leading the team for a while. It's not an easy role, the captaincy, we senior players have helped him out and he has improved in the last couple of years. He is also doing well with the ball," said Gayle while speaking to media reporters in Dhaka, yesterday.

Sammy, 28, replaced Chris Gayle as West Indies skipper in October 2010, after the Jamaican left-hander and his then deputy Dwayne Bravo, had chosen not to sign central contracts with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), in a bid to play in the foreign Twenty20 leagues.

At the time of his appointment, the St Lucia pace-bowling all-rounder had played only 8 Tests and 41 one-dayers. Since then, he has led the Caribbean contingent in 21 Test matches, winning four, losing eight while the remaining nine ended in draws. His one-day captaincy record is a bit more encouraging with 17 wins and 22 losses in 41 ODIs.

Recently, Sammy led the West Indies cricket team to its first world title in more than three decades, with a World T20 triumph in Sri Lanka last month.

The Windies, under Sammy, are currently touring Bangladesh to play two Tests, five One Day Internationals and a one-off T20 International. The series gets underway at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka, from Tuesday, November 13, 2012.

"Well, obviously we have to get off to a good start and start the series well," said Gayle, a veteran of 93 Tests and 234 ODIs. "It's a long series ahead of us, so hopefully we can get a good start. We didn't get a game before the Test so it's more important," the Windies opener added further.

Darren Sammy and men were scheduled to play a three-day tour game against the BCB XI at the BKSP ground, but the match was called off due to heavy rains in the region.

Gayle warned his side against complacency, saying it has always been tough to play the Bengali Tigers on their home turfs.

West Indies beat Bangladesh 1-0 in the two-Test series last year. Gayle praised West Indian captain Darren Sammy's leadership.

"It?s always difficult to play Bangladesh in Bangladesh...They have a captain who leads from the front," said the Jamaican left-hander.
